Genres & Description

Action Crime Drama

8.9 / 10

The defense and the prosecution have rested and the jury is filing into the jury room to decide if a young man is guilty or innocent of murdering his father. What begins as an open-and-shut case of murder soon becomes a detective story that presents a succession of clues creating doubt, and a mini-drama of each of the jurors' prejudices and preconceptions about the trial, the accused, and each other. Based on the play, all of the action takes place on the stage of the jury room.

My 3 reasons are: 1. Great acting 2. Effective and not-too-heavy-handed message 3. Restoration of my faith in democracy The third point is especially important. It's better to have some idiots and/or assholes share power w/ non-idiots than to entrust one idiot and/or asshole w/ all the power because at least a non-idiot/non-asshole can use some of his power to check the others' in a democracy. Henry Fonda was one such non-idiot/non-asshole. - @Saturday, April 16, 2016 3:52 AM

What a phenomenal film. I was glued to the screen for every second of it. The funny thing is though in the end, when you think about it, the kid probably was guilty. - @Friday, August 14, 2015 6:11 AM

I love how Fonda never says "I'm right. You're wrong." He keeps admitting throughout the entire film that he could be wrong. - @Wednesday, April 1, 2015 2:58 AM

My favorite scene is when Fonda is trying to explain something. He sees Cobb and Webber playing Tic-Tac-Toe, goes over to them, takes the paper out from under them, angrily says, "This isn't a game!!!", and crumples it up in his left hand. - @Wednesday, October 8, 2014 6:02 PM

Brilliant. I first watched this movie early in the morning, on a rainy Saturday afternoon, and i thought it was amazing. Me and my Grandfather are both huge movie buffs, and the criterion collection is the way to go. Now i will only buy criterion DVDs, nothing else. p.s. i think you guys should add "Pather Panchali-1954 to your collection. - @Wednesday, November 23, 2011 3:38 PM
