In the year 1984, rocket bombs and rats prey on the inhabitants of the crumbling metropolis of London. Far away on the Malabar Front, a seemingly interminable war rages against Eastasia. The Ministry of Truth broadcasts ceaselessly to the population via its inescapable network of telescreens. These devices, which pervade all aspects of peoples' lives, are also capable of monitoring their every word and action. They form part of an elaborate surveillance system used by the Ministry of Love, and its dreaded agents the Thought Police, to serve their singular goal: the elimination of 'thoughtcrime'. Winston Smith is a Party worker - part of the vast social caste known as the Outer Party, the rank and file of the sprawling apparatus of government. Winston works in the Records Department of the Ministry of Truth - the section charged with modifying historical news archives for consistency. When by chance Winston uncovers incontrovertible proof that the Party is lying, he embarks on a ...

It still frustrates me how many people don't know where the name for that god-awful TV show 'Big Brother' actually comes from. - @Thursday, October 10, 2013 9:43 AM

Why change the name? If it's based on the novel, then you really can't change the name. I was born in 1984, but I didn't read the novel until very recently (this month, in fact). Overall, I found the book far more boring than terrifying. I have no intention of watching the movie; the trailer is enough. - @Wednesday, September 25, 2013 8:08 PM

We do at the Epilogue. Winston and Julia meet again and confess that they betrayed one another within the Ministry of Love and she confesses that she no longer has the same feelings for him. - @Monday, August 5, 2013 11:38 PM

Yes, but need to change the name. Because 1984 is long time ago. - @Saturday, June 8, 2013 11:56 PM

Everyone expects THIS as totalitarian government. But there is no O'Brien in such systems, never. There's only a mass of people who carry orders like robots. There is enough of hope supplied by Gov't to make the life bearable, to keep majority calm. And the human leash is not as tight - it's just tight enough for private rebellious remarks. We've been there. It was our world. Take it as a warning. We've seen that. We've been there. And you're rushing there too. Greetings from Iron Curtain. - @Monday, May 27, 2013 11:50 AM

Terrifying, yes, but even more sinister and difficult to defeat would be the horror of a world like the one Aldous Huxley described in Brave New World. A dictatorship will always have those who hate and fight it, but masses of mindless drones who are slaves to their own pleasure will be far too pacified to fight to restore human dignity. It just brings me to tears. - @Monday, May 27, 2013 3:55 AM

The world in the book 1984 is nothing like North Korea, if anything it is more like USA. Everyone has a television, of course it is optional unlike in 1984 but almost everyone has one. Oh and of course the party can't see you through the tv. If you have ever been to New York, ou would notice how many security cameras are operating, most of them are for private, business use although it is all the same. Why is the USA always at war? War on terrorism, war on drugs, war in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan. - @Sunday, May 19, 2013 7:13 PM

It already has, just watch any documentary made in the last few years about north korea the place is like someone gave the "great" leader a copy of 1984 and asked him if he could make that happend in real life... - @Wednesday, March 27, 2013 7:09 AM

It definitely needs to be remade by someone that could do for 1984 what Peter Jackson did with the Lord of the Rings. I would exaggerate the things that made it so prophetic and similar to the current situation. The telescreens would look just like a cross between flatscreen computers and smart HDTVs and instead of helicopters floating outside people's windows there would just be ubiquitous little drone-copters with microcameras mounted on them and BB would look more like a regular president. - @Monday, October 15, 2012 3:10 AM

I'm reading the book now and totally loving it !! Reminds me of the hunger games in a way. I mean the whole dystopian thing. I think there should be a remake of this movie, with some changes. For instance the year should be 2090 or something and a new title and a background story for the revolution must be created as an update, because well, Capitalism is long gone and if we keep the original story, it won't sound realistic. The movie would be a hit ! Especially with this century's technology - @Monday, June 18, 2012 10:53 AM

keep drinkin the kool aid. You make yourself a willing slave to the right. They think you're a pig, here to fill their farms and get fat so they can eat you all up. They tell you about morals and God and all the while they work you and harvest your cash. There is no hope for you unless you open your mind. - @Tuesday, April 17, 2012 6:14 AM

oh i dont mean to retcon the history books. I mean to go back in time and make sure he was never the president lol. but we already are the Orwellian State. Republicans have even gone so far as to rewrite school history books to read the way they prefer it to in some states. And we all have those nice big flat telescreens and your celphone gps tracks you, and soon the CIA says it will be putting monitoring chips in household appliances but that if youve done nothing wrong youve nothing to fear! - @Saturday, March 24, 2012 11:18 AM

@americaisbacktrump erm I have no idea what you are talking about... but Orwell fought in the Spanish civil war on the side of the Republicans. As a socialist, he was forced to leave by (supposedly allied) Soviet hostility. This made him a lifelong opponent of Stalinism. Thus, Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm portray betrayed revolutions, where the underlying principles of equality, justice and freedom have been forgotten. - @Wednesday, November 9, 2011 7:11 PM
