I've just finished watching Billy Wilder's "A Foreign Affair," starring Jean Arthur and wonderful Marlene Dietrich.  The MC was debonair Ben Mankiewicz, whom I'm admiring more and more each day as an equal to the equally debonair Robert Osborne. Both are fine movie historians.   After watching this evergreen (interesting that Jean Arthur had top billing, Marlene, second), I went to Wiki for a backgrounder on Billy Wilder and what I treat I found!  Wilder's bio was so fascinating I put it at once into Favorites, where I will revisit it as often as possible.  However, I must confess, it's Wilder's contribution to film noir that I most appreciate it, since comedy doesn't always fit my sometimes melancholy disposition.  I did, however, find myself in stitches on reading Joe E. Brown's retort to finding out Lemmon's character was a man, something to the effect, "Nobody's perfect."  Those may not be the exact words, but they give you some idea as to the comedy line.  Thank you, Ben Mankiewicz and Billy Wilder for making my day (quite naturally I'm going to Amazon.com to order "A Foreign Affair") . - @Saturday, August 22, 2015 7:34 PM
