Young Friederich has humble origins, but rises to the attention of his new boss, Karl. As he volunteers to tutor his employer's son, he gets more and more attached to Karl's young wife Lotte. She refuses however to betray her husband even when they learn Friedrich must go to Mexico for two years to supervise a mining project for Karl. Friedrich and Lotte swear to one another they will stay true to each other, but the oncoming war keeps them apart for far longer than expected.

What's wrong with this movie? Is it the anticlimactic ending where they just stand there when they finally see each other after all those years? Is it how she is all alone in this mansion with no relatives or friends ever visiting her? Is it how the husband never has any business person see him at his home of reclusivity but his protege? We are made to believe the protege completely runs the business, tutors the son AND has time to do puzzles at night. Really? Or, is it how she always seems serenely happy with her ogre husband? How believable is it that she and her husband sleep together in the same bed...as sick as he is when back then so many wealthy married men slept in separate beds from their wives? Is it how we never find out what happens to her husband's business after he dies or find out about the inheritance. In The REAL WORLD bankers would have closed in on the business and she probably would have lost the mansion and her husband's business. Then there's the pace of the movie - so slow the first year of Friedrichs alliance with his boss and bosse's wife - that one year feelsl like years of time and then when Friedrich goes to Mexico for 8 (or is it 6?) years it feels like a few minutes of time goes by... And why couldn't we see him in Mexico? Was it to make us yearn for him like she did? All that did was make us yearn for seeing him so we would be more entertained...it would have been so much more exciting to see his life in Mexico than it was watching her yearning for him, going to the post office.,,yearning walking sadly..then going to the post office...,Then there's Charlotte's husband who was mean then sweet and loving then indifferent, then mean then sweet.... He puts his wife and Friedrich together and then secretly watches them. But she is always loving and devoted to her husband. Not a crack in her fascade of devotion? No scenes of him accusing the wife of cheating on him? In what planet would that not happen? Watch Camelot to see how a well written script about a similar scenario of a wife cheating on her older husband with the husband's hot young protege is done to perfection. The movie was well acted, beautiful to watch, great costumes and music. I so wish as I do with so many movies that it was more believable and had scenes in it that were true to human nature.
