For me, what's extraordinary about the film is how it captures the accumulating familial and interpersonal factors that underpin mental health crises, but without in any way leading or manipulating its audience. Commentaries on the film have suggested that the character Mabel's behaviour is consistent with a diagnosis of bipolar or borderline personality disorder, but such speculation is largely incidental to the film, whose real value is its searing honesty and truthfulness about the 'everydayness' of mental illness. Profoundly poignant, but unsentimental, it's certainly the finest portrayal of mental illness I've ever seen committed to screen - and it's up against some strong competition.
