Action Crime Drama Romance Western

6.8 / 10

1882, New Mexico Territory. Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch are itinerant lawmen, hired by desperate towns as marshal and deputy. The city fathers of Appaloosa hire them after Randall Bragg, a newly-arrived rancher with money and a gang of thugs, disrupts commerce and kills three local lawmen. Cole and Hitch contrive to arrest Bragg and bring him to trial, but hanging him proves difficult. Meanwhile, a widow has arrived in town, Allison French, pretty, refined, and good-natured. Virgil falls hard, and it seems mutual, but there may be more to Allie than meets the eye. Can friendship and skill with a gun overcome a pernicious villain and green-eyed jealousy?

One thing i liked the most about this movie,is that it portrayed how the real gunfights were taking place back in the west, and not that Hollywood quick-draw action where one man draws fast as lighting killing 3-4 people instantly. - @Wednesday, April 9, 2014 12:05 PM

Well if they get around to making the movie Resolution Virgil and Hitch are really good in that one too they kind of join forces with a pair of gun fighters Kato and Rose. - @Saturday, September 14, 2013 4:41 AM

I like that this film is kind of the old classic "lawman rolls into town" trope and turns it on it's head. I like western and really films that sort of turn tropes around anyway. Such as the anti-hero in Good For Nothing, he is a really fantastic protagonist. . bitly . com/ z rh G kf - @Tuesday, February 28, 2012 8:36 PM

@WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 Make sure you check out Appaloosa too - one of my favorite westerns in recent years. No Country is garbage in my opinion. The movie ends before the climax, nothing really gets resolved, and all the characters are weak except for the villain. Truly a putrid movie, if you can even call it a movie. I still regret seeing it. - @Thursday, February 3, 2011 1:24 AM

At one point I would not have been remotely interested in westerns but there has been a trend in the last few years with this, No Country for Old Men etc.... im going to have to check some of them out; - @Thursday, February 3, 2011 12:58 AM

No, a criminal fears getting caught and an invader doesn't really carry a weapon with him when going inside a house. You've been watching too many movies. The reason I know that is because I actually did live in bad neighborhoods and having a gun is the last thing you need. - @Sunday, February 28, 2010 4:23 AM

flagwaver1969
@devilsblood Sure. You loved on a bad neighborhood. Don't rebuke the truth,BOY. The only thing a shitbag understands is death, not consequences. That is a universal truth. Live it, understand it!!! - @Saturday, February 27, 2010 3:18 PM

flagwaver1969
The only thing a criminal or tyrant fears is death. The firearm provides that fear for your protection. What are you going to do if an armed criminal invades your house? Ask him to kindly leave? - @Friday, February 26, 2010 6:07 PM

flagwaver1969
I agree. Open Range was very well done. If you ever get a chance read the Appaloosa novel by Robert B. Parker. Every one of his Western novels are great reading. - @Friday, February 26, 2010 6:04 PM

Good Westerns have become a rarity these days. This movie is a rarity and we have the author, Robert Parker to thank for the idea. The movie was well done. - @Monday, January 11, 2010 11:27 PM

Damn Ed Harris did a fine acting and directing job. Amazing craftsman. Abyss, Apollo 13, The Rock, Appaloosa, Beautiful Mind, Truman Show, oh hell you name it, he's superb! he really is one of the greatest. Like a Tom Hanks or Denzel Washington. They can play a totally different character one film to the next and even change up their appearance in the process and roll with, no questions asked. Not to mention he gave himself 2nd billing in his own film when he's clearly the lead!!! Class act! - @Saturday, July 4, 2009 4:53 AM
