It is just another day at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a few astronauts were repairing a satellite until, out of nowhere, a series of asteroids came crashing into the shuttle, destroying it. These asteroids also decimated New York soon thereafter. Then, NASA discovered that there is an asteroid roughly the size of Texas heading towards the Earth, and when it does hit the Earth, the planet itself and all of its inhabitants will be obliterated, worse, the asteroid will hit the Earth in 18 days. Unfortunately, NASA's plans to destroy the asteroid are irrelevant. That is when the U.S. military decides to use a nuclear warhead to blow the asteroid to pieces. Then, scientists decide to blow the asteroid with the warhead inside the asteroid itself. The only man to do it, is an oil driller named Harry Stamper and his group of misfit drillers and geologists. As he and his drill team prepare for space excavation, the asteroid is still heading towards the Earth. When...

Armageddon is a masterpiece- technically. That is why it is in the collection. Artistically- it smells. - @Tuesday, May 21, 2013 12:07 AM

Armageddon is about as mainstream of a film as they get and that doesn't get on Criterion unless you consider old classic films mainstream. Armageddon is shot so stereotypically, you're certainly right, it's only upholding the shitty Hollywood action packed status quo, it has nothing original worth preserving and it's so mainstream it doesn't need Criterion to preserve it anyway. - @Tuesday, March 5, 2013 10:25 AM

Michael Bay is one of the best visual artists of the century and his films are as smart and carefully constructed as any ever. His work is comparable to Reinfenstahl and while there's a world of difference between the militaries the two filmmakers are backing, their methods of upholding the status quo are virtually identical. They shoot power better than anybody ever has. - @Tuesday, March 5, 2013 9:17 AM

Bay films have some of the best shot and best edited scenes in the history of film. He does things with his moving camera that Hitchcock and Ophuls would've loved. The color grading in Transformers 3 alone is significant. Armageddon has some of William Fitchner, Buscemi, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Peter Stormare's best comedy work. - @Tuesday, March 5, 2013 9:16 AM

Don't even suggest the Transformers trilogy could be on criterion. - @Thursday, September 27, 2012 8:45 PM

No, they should retract The Rock and Armageddon from the collection. - @Thursday, September 27, 2012 8:44 PM

I'd really really like to see the three reasons cause this is total blasphemy, they should've done Kindergarden Cop instead. - @Thursday, September 27, 2012 8:43 PM

The biggest 'prank' Criterion pulled is not having The Rock and Armageddon on Blu-Ray yet. Along with the likes of Hard Boiled, This Is Spinal Tap, Silence of The Lambs, and Robocop. Get a move on! - @Friday, September 7, 2012 11:17 PM

Criterion is to release films that are classics and preserve our culture, kind of like the National Film Registry. This film is to represent hollywood blockbusters, honestly this film is pretty damn good and don't see why everyone has to bitch about it. It's much better than that Transformers trilogy. - @Wednesday, September 5, 2012 8:58 PM

Criterion should have announced the release of this movie on their collection for an April Fools Day prank. I mean, it just feels weird for such a commercial and generic movie to be in the same collection as movies like "Rules of the Game", "Seven Samurai", and "The 400 Blows". - @Thursday, April 5, 2012 10:09 PM
