Action Crime Drama Mystery Thriller Western

7.8 / 10

From the time John J. Macreedy steps off the train in Black Rock, he feels a chill from the local residents. The town is only a speck on the map and few if any strangers ever come to the place. Macreedy himself is tight-lipped about the purpose of his trip and he finds that the hotel refuses him a room, the local garage refuses to rent him a car and the sheriff is a useless drunkard. It's apparent that the locals have something to hide but when he finally tells them that he is there to speak to a Japanese-American farmer named Kamoko, he touches a nerve so sensitive that he will spend the next 24 hours fighting for his life.

I'm fond of this film, and the recent Warner Archive blu-ray really does it justice. Ernest Borgnine is for me particularly memorable playing one of the local thugs. It's a part he could do in his sleep but that doesn't make it any less menacing. - @Tuesday, July 31, 2018 7:36 PM

Borgnine beat Tracey for an Oscar in Marty.. Filmed right after this - @Wednesday, March 14, 2018 8:16 AM

Agree with everything you said. It also a film about self-overcoming. Fantastic dialogue without which the Coen brothers would not be the Coen brothers, and not just in No Country For Old Men. - @Thursday, July 20, 2017 9:18 PM

I haven't seen the film--had never heard of it till today, actually--but from what I have learned about it and clips I have seen from it today, it seems to be a movie about racism that never shows the face of the "hated race." That in itself is interesting, I think. - @Sunday, May 7, 2017 9:54 AM

I agree with Dan . Wonderful acting, cinematography, tension and atmosphere throughout the film . - @Monday, May 1, 2017 6:42 AM

One of the most perfectly cast movies of all time. - @Friday, January 27, 2017 4:47 AM

This has to be the most inane movies of all time!A hamlet of (14) losers.... (only (7) of which seem to be employed)... have no way of getting out despite the fact that the only railroad station master receives stops only once every 4 years, while the nearby (20) room hotel has no vacancies, and the café offers only chili, while the gas station, the jail, veterinary/mortician and a barber shop seem to be thriving.   What could be more realistic??? - @Saturday, January 7, 2017 12:00 AM

Was filmed in Lone Pine California and the nearby Alabama Hills. - @Saturday, March 19, 2016 2:22 AM
