Ballet 422 is a record of the creative process of a young choreographer Justin Peck, just 26 years old, hired to create a new ballet for the winter season of the New York City Ballet in 2013. The New York City Ballet is considered one of the best companies in the world. Since 1990 he is led by Peter Martins, his Ballet Master in Chief. The documentary describes the intense backstage work that takes place during the process of creating and learning this new ballet: "Paz de la Jolla". It shows Peck working with his fellow dancers (Justin Peck is also a soloist at NYCB!), with musicians, lighting technicians, and costume designers in the composition of a new work, his third creation for the NYCB. It is the first time the New York City Ballet is exposed during the creation of a new a ballet.

My humble comments... I think this documentary successfully captured all the different threads - choreography, orchestration, costumes, makeup, set, lighting - that come together - and must come together - and must come together by the premiere - in creating a new ballet, and the excitement and tensions that mount as these threads weave into a sturdy fabric - or fray apart. The viewer clearly sees how many dedicated people in many different disciplines it takes to mount a ballet - and how such a young choreographer must have sufficient knowledge of all these areas to work and communicate effectively with everyone involved to bring his vision to the stage. Beautifully filmed and structured! As for Mr. Peck's choreography - where does he get his movement from? How did he build such a personal vocabulary on top of the often overwhelmingly rich vocabulary of classical ballet? And watching him work, you see the inadequacy of words to communicate movement, but how dancers intuitively understand one another - a few seemingly non-specific words couple with a marked-out gesture and the nuance of the entire dance changes. Truly mysterious. And then Mr. Peck ran to his dressing room to do make up? After that, he was able to perform? - @Tuesday, December 1, 2015 5:47 AM

Strange movie/documentary.  Lots of not much happening including many gratuitous shots of Peck just walking.  No emotion or explanation, just him walking.  Also for someone who had just dabuted a new ballet he was not very excited. - @Sunday, August 23, 2015 4:27 AM

Great film. I found some music I liked: Tchaikovsky symphony 3, 1st movement. But does anyone know what is the other piece of music we see the orchestra playing later on: it's at the 45min mark in the full film, we see Peck sitting in the theatre watching it (just before Prima gets her outfit altered). In the final credits there is also Bizet symphony 1 but it doesn't seem to be this. Any ideas? Newly scored music? Sounds like Russian early c20 of some sort. - @Saturday, August 1, 2015 12:18 AM

Just watched it on Netflix. In all honesty, this trailer is more exciting and dramatic thanks to great editing than the documentary is. It's a good lesson on why TV isn't realistic and why reality shows are scripted, cuz real real life is boring. But the choreography is beautiful and the mood is pleasant. - @Friday, July 31, 2015 5:59 AM

Saw Ballet 422 on Netflix. Unfortunately, I've seen news clips on broadcast channels that did more exciting treatment of this subject, even if they're just covering a local Nutcracker production around the holidays. That's not to say it's not a fascinating film -- especially if you're into the arts, dance and theater production specifically -- but it just doesn't really do much. The end leaves you wanting a lot more, which speaks to the level of greatness on display from the doc's featured subjects. The dancing and the dancers are a joy to watch. Which also reminds me that none of the artists involved in the production were ever identified with captions or text on screen. Kind of frustrating and atypical for such a documentary. Also liked that there was maybe a vapor of attention to the negative aspects of ballet, like the injuries. Some films and documentaries hound the artistic melodrama for entertainment a bit too much. Alas, the only real takeaway is that the choreographer is quite a flame in his field, and NYCB should have your money. As a film, however, it aspires but never becomes. Such a beautiful and rare thing captured in a very sterile and cold documentary. It's really bittersweet. They caught a brilliant piece of history and human magic on film, and treated it like an orca in a swimming pool. - @Thursday, July 9, 2015 6:40 AM

I love these. It's too bad they haven't made a documentary on the Opera the Paris dance company in such a long time though. That's the mother of ballet (: - @Friday, May 22, 2015 4:17 PM
