In order to grab their land, Hedley Lemar (Harvey Korman), a politically connected nasty person, sends in his henchmen to make the town unlivable. After the sheriff is killed, the town demands a new sheriff from the Governor (Mel Brooks). Hedley convinces him to send the town the first Black sheriff (Cleavon Little) in the west. Bart is a sophisticated urbanite who will have some difficulty winning over the townspeople.

Now I have to go find this trailer without Iron Eyes' voice over. It looks like a hoot. - @Thursday, December 6, 2018 2:45 PM

Classic. This movie was the proper way to go about attacking racism. What Hollywood is doing now, is something completely different and something gross. "The sheriff is near!" - @Thursday, October 18, 2018 11:39 PM

One of the funniest films ever. Never tire of Mel Brooks' iconic spoof. - @Wednesday, August 23, 2017 12:54 AM

A great and funny film by the great Mel Brooks. A great spoof of the western films during the golden age. Madeline Kahn makes a great impression of Marlene Dietrich. - @Monday, January 30, 2017 5:01 AM

Madeline Kahn had more talent in one of her pinkies than Landis has in his whole body. John Belushi said woman weren't funny. KAHN WAS HILARIOUS AND HOT - @Wednesday, August 31, 2016 8:21 AM

Its sad, he totally missed the point of the picture (racism being so stupid its funny). Landis has directed movies and he has said before its not hard. He's entitled to his opinion. He directed INTO THE NIGHT? which was OK and ANIMAL HOUSE which was awesome. TRADING PLACES was very good too. At the same time, I can read better explanations online or listen to them at the bar. He directed the segment of the TWILIGHT ZONE movie where Vic Morrow & two young Vietnamese extras were accidentally killed on his set. He probably didn't sleep well for 10 years after that so, let's cut the tired and cynical hack some slack. - @Wednesday, August 31, 2016 8:17 AM

I loved the gate closing in front of the pack, as I noticed Slim Picken's superb horsemanship. That horse was fresh and nearly dumped him into the gate. Then I looked him up and learned he'd been a rodeo clown. The horse is clearly his own, it's professionally trained, surely by him. - @Thursday, June 16, 2016 5:26 PM

I love this movie because it's so politically incorrect. That's why they couldn't make this movie today. - @Thursday, March 10, 2016 4:52 PM

I agree about THE PRODUCERS. there's a hilarious scene where the producers of this play think they can make a fortune by making a flop.at one point they walk to the roof of a 3 decker only to see &hear the rantings of a NAZI. when you're in on the joke, knowing their greed knows no bounds this scene is 10 times funnier than if you didnt' know how dishonest and greedy the producers are.they look like such fools as they listen to this nut w/ bird shit on him. - @Thursday, March 3, 2016 5:34 AM

I went to a Mom and Pop local movie theatre in '78, and they cut the bean farting scene right out.   But left in "They blacker than we are". - @Friday, May 8, 2015 6:57 AM

Every bit as funny today as when it was released. No one is spared. Great cast too. - @Saturday, December 20, 2014 11:17 PM

This movie is actually a parody of a parody. DESTRY RIDES AGAIN, the flick that this spoofs, is a very funny western comedy in it's own right. When they first ran this on network TV, excision of the "N" word rendered this virtually a silent movie (as opposed to SILENT MOVIE). "Hey, look, it's Hedy Lamarr!". - @Friday, September 12, 2014 10:43 AM
