Disenchanted by the church and his devout Christian mother, 19 year-old Donald escapes Texas for the liberal Northwest and attends Reed College at the urging of his secular father. At Reed College, Don finds that his classmates, from all walks of life, are more anti-religious and anti-everything than he was prepared for. In an attempt to fit in, and more importantly, in an attempt to find himself, Don joins an activist group which forces him to question what he really believes in.

Serious note, I live in the Philippines and we don't get discriminated for our beliefs. Christians don't get discriminated here. I feel sorry for the Christians who get discriminated for their beliefs in other countries. - @Monday, September 21, 2015 7:13 AM

HOW IN THE FREAKING WAY DID YOU GUYS GOT JASON MARSDEN TO BE IN THE MOVIE!!?? I adore him for his voice acting roles. I'm also watching Eerie Indiana right now and I think he is just amazing, absolutely amazing as the mysterious and brutish Dash X. Glad he's still working on-screen. - @Monday, September 21, 2015 7:01 AM

Just saw it now, a refreshing take on Christianity, the good the bad and the ugly. Boldly done, good flick. - @Wednesday, August 13, 2014 10:49 PM

And really, this is a feel-good movie for college educated Christians who want to feel deep and intellectual AND get those great feelings of rebellion against "the man" by putting down the mainstream church. Until of course Don Miller starts hanging with the Billy Graham Jesus Industry as he is now........... - @Monday, June 30, 2014 10:44 PM

Donald Miller cheaply exploits Reed College by trumpeting his association with it..........This is all a big ruse so Christians can feel hip and thoughtful...And the premise of his title, that "jazz doesn't resolve" is ridiculously wrong and any editor should have pointed that out. - @Sunday, May 18, 2014 6:55 PM

I'm a Christian filmaker and Tree of Life is one of my favorite movies. I hate Christian films that don't portray real human problems and emotions. I thought this film was a step in the right direction thought. Better than Courageous and Fireproof lol Blaaahhh - @Wednesday, June 5, 2013 6:02 AM

The movie was honest, which is what I liked about it. This is a great portrayal of what the world is actually like for Christians and non-Christians. I feel like it was brilliant in addressing social issues within the Church, and between the church and the rest of the world. However, the gospel message was not presented, which was problematic. It definitely promoted tolerance, but didn't mention salvation. - @Friday, May 3, 2013 3:03 PM

"This move is nothing but haters loving the sound of their pharisaical voices. These are the type of people that will persecute the true follower of Christ" Could you be any more of a jerk? You criticize and hate on a person or idea about criticizing and hating. This is the most hypocritical thing I have ever heard! Someone is just trying to be creative with the mind God gave them, and actually not suck at doing something and you criticize! C'mon. - @Tuesday, September 18, 2012 2:32 PM

Dissension, dissension, dissension. This is just flat out stupid. Movies like this are catalysts towards people hating Christians! Its very deceptive and maligning of truth. People have to get back to the true gospel of turning our back from the things of this world and not trying to be like it and following Jesus. This movie is nothing but haters loving the sound of their pharisaical voices. These are the type of people that will persecute the true followers of Christ. - @Saturday, August 25, 2012 7:02 PM

This is a flawed film. But it's a beautifully refreshing breath of fresh air. There is a huge difference between the gospel message and the manner in which it is delivered. The gospel must not change, but it's delivery and presentation MUST change to remain culturally relevant. Blue Like Jazz never presents a true gospel message, but it may be the first movie I've seen that tries imbue its protagonist with a realistic sense of doubt and wrestling that doesn't feel like a movie of the week. - @Wednesday, August 8, 2012 5:39 PM

Uneven film; pretentious/cartoonish at times and then...near transcendent. (The "Don't look at the flame" moment segued into what became a pretty good movie.) In the end, though, my hat goes off. The film dared to go where few have trod. And as Dante - along with many other artists - both learned and amply demonstrated, the whole "dark" thing is a lot easier to pull off than the light. Kudos to Taylor for wrestling with the latter. - @Tuesday, April 17, 2012 5:54 AM

I was not very impressed with this movie. I saw it yesterday, and the lead character was one of the most unlikable characters I've ever witnessed. He was a major asshole to everyone throughout the whole movie, and at the end, everything was magically okay. 2/5 stars. - @Monday, April 16, 2012 7:17 PM
