Genres & Description

Action Fantasy Horror Romance

7.5 / 10

This version of Dracula is closely based on Bram Stoker's classic novel of the same name. A young lawyer (Jonathan Harker) is assigned to a gloomy village in the mists of eastern Europe. He is captured and imprisoned by the undead vampire Dracula, who travels to London, inspired by a photograph of Harker's betrothed, Mina Murray. In Britain, Dracula begins a reign of seduction and terror, draining the life from Mina's closest friend, Lucy Westenra. Lucy's friends gather together to try to drive Dracula away.

I love and hate this film, I have the dread in my heart that Jonathan feels. He's never going to have the same relationship with Mina ever again. I was always thinking throughout the film that Dracula was being extremely selfish. Jonathan and Mina seemed to have such a connection in the beginning of the film. Tore me to pieces when she started worshipping Nosferatu. - @Wednesday, November 28, 2018 4:01 AM

A rather poor adaptation. Gary Oldman was quite good as Dracula, Anthony Hopkins made for a reasonable Van Helsing but the rest of the cast were dreadful. The sets for Dracula's castle didn't look the place is described in the original novel. - @Friday, May 11, 2018 10:39 PM

This film should have won best picture and is on par with the greatest ever made. I personally hold it in my top 5 films of all time. It did not win more awards and is not more revered because it's content is hard to stomach for the average conservative critic and movie goer.........and because of Keanu, who was style type cast from Bill and Ted......He plays his role perfectly as he should be in this though.........a naive real estate rich kid......not very smart and in love with Mina........Gary Oldman gives one of the greatest performances in cinema history. It deserves Way more respect than it gets. - @Monday, December 18, 2017 9:10 AM

Gonna need a cane at some point . almost 24 yrs Of both wanting to see the movie (thus when it came out naturally was banned from seeing the dreadful nudity (face palm. but not of Winona except thru sheer smh) off the videotape) then well 18 years old arrived and had my own choice I guess even though Rated R is 17 and above. crazy parents :P )Violence no problem nudity get... out.... and totally absurd. Best Dracula movie via over producing something :) Only Fancis coulda pulled it off. - @Sunday, October 30, 2016 7:21 PM

A few Dracula / vampire movies that were much superior to this movie: Nosferatu (1922) It's in the public domain on youtube so it's free to watch. I recommend that you just watch it with the lights off. Several people got heart attacks in the theater when this was originally released. It is truly a horrifying masterpiece.. Nosferatu the Vampire (1979) starring Klaus Kinski is a brilliantly produced film. A worthy tribute to the original Nosferatu... Dracula with Bela Lugosi (1931), not the best script ever but Bela Lugosi SHINES in this role. His appearance as Dracula became the stereotypical Dracula "look" for Halloween The BBC version of Dracula staring Louis Jordan (1977) wow Louis Jordan plays the role masterfully. Very believable and this is a very respectful and enjoyable interpretation. "Count Yorga Vampire" and "the Return of Count Yorga" both with Robert Quarry... This was originally intended to be a cheap soft core porn however Robert Quarry convinced the producers, investors to make it a straight horror. WOW Quarry really plays the role of a refined aristocratic vampire lord so convincingly, it's a joy to behold... "Blacula" and "Scream Blacula Scream" both starring William Marshal. William Marshal puts on a commanding performance... He actually convinced the producers to add in the whole background story about Blacula being an African prince and despite the fact that it's a blaxploitation film and despite the fact that the concept is a little corny, it actually works and you can't help but "feel" for the tragic story of Mamuwalde... Horror of Dracula , Dracula Prince of Darkness, Dracula has Risen from the Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula and Scars of Dracula with Christopher Lee. The rest of the franchise where Dracula was brought into the 70's was a joke... Also, Jess Franco's Count Dracula (1970) with Christopher Lee was just a terrible mess of a movie despite co starring Klaus Kinski, who would himself later play Dracula in Nosferatu the Vampyre and then reprise a similar role a few years later in "Vampire in Venice" a movie whose production was legendary for being a disastrous mess. It's well known that they fired THREE different directors until the producer and Kinski themselves directed the film, despite a lack of directing experience... Klaus Kinski was very erratic and difficult to deal with. Apparently he REFUSED to wear the Nosferatu makeup citing the fact that it was much too painful. Knowing full well that HE himself was essential to the production of the film, he power tripped his way through the production Dracula (1973) with Jack Palance was pretty descent, definitely worth watching for Dracula fans. - @Friday, October 14, 2016 3:48 AM

this interpretation was interesting but honestly it's a little over the top.. The authenticity of the story was sacrificed and it was specifically made to appeal to a modern audience. The old Dracula in the beginning of the movie with two boobies on his head looks ridiculous and the makeup looks cheap to be honest, not terrifying or intimidating in the least. The 1977 BBC version is closer to the novel, probably the closest interpretation ever made, and I personally think that although it's much more "plain", the acting is far superior, especially Van Helsing and Louis Jordan as Dracula. Keanu Reeves was completely miscast and both him and Winona Ryder stumble with their pathetic British accents... In my opinion Robert Quarry as Count Yorga and William Marshal as Blacula were two of the best on screen vampires of all time. Honourable mentions should also go out to Christopher Lee, although his version of Dracula was more of a background character for the majority of the franchise... - @Friday, October 14, 2016 3:25 AM

Not a good Dracula movie. The love story between Dracula and Mina distracts me from the Dracula story that I love, and although I was invested in Dracula and Mina getting together, I did not like the other characters. I'm not sure if they did Renfield right, and Jonathan Harker was so bland. Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing was just too weird and unimpressive in my eyes. For anyone who wants to watch a really great Dracula movie, watch Nosferatu (1922) and Horror of Dracula (1958). - @Sunday, May 17, 2015 7:15 PM
