Dear Russell. He ALWAYS ends up the centre of attention, not as some unwitting victim of media and celebrity gossip machines, but by his own hand. He says things like "I've had fame, money and attention and it don't do nuffin for ya" etc, but really what he means is "It wasn't enough. I've run out of ways to feed my ego. I'm jaded by my own boredom and I have to keep raising the stakes to feel alive. I'll turn to anything to keep the dose getting higher and higher. Perhaps, next, politics will give me the highs I crave?". Guess what Russell? You will be chasing that high your whole life whilst the rest of us deal with the damage. This may sound cold hearted, mean-spirited and cowardly, coming from the arms length of a youtube comment directed at a distant celebrity behemoth, but, it's true. Everything he does is powered by his unsatiated greed and desire for fame and attention. He's a thrill seeker, basically. It's obvious. His film career flopped very badly. His marriage failed to retain legs and so his faux-spiritual, cultural messiah guide to politics career was just another way for him to indulge in his favourite drug: attention. Even his attempts at self-awareness seem contrived and do nothing to assuage his guilt in this regard. In fact, to me, it increases it. Russell is a very captivating, vaguely sincere, slightly slimy man with a great capacity for language and a passable charisma that simply cannot get out of his own way. Despite everything, he remains likeable. Despite even my dislike of him. I sort of feel sorry for him. But, then I remember that this guy is trivialising politics by constantly inserting himself into laughable discussions about 'Revolution' and demagogue-ing young voters to increase his bloated cult of personality. Honestly, I'm quite inclined to say "Fuck Russell Brand". But, that doesn't seem quite fair. Just, "Fuck off" then. Saw it over the weekend. A bit too long and lacking in focus and balance. If the film is about Brand's transformation into socio-political thought leader, as the film maker states it is, the film should spend much less time on his past and more on his present and future. There should have been way more discussion about his book, what he did with the TREWS, the establishment's interpretation of Millibrand's defeat, what the fans think of him and what's he up to now...touring. Instead, the film is filled with too much focus on his character flaws... and we all have them... and Big media gets too great a platform to express its negative opinions...while positive insight from fans, like Rosie O'Donnell and his core audience, gets considerably less time.
