The head of the programme explains that the life support system was faulty and that NASA can't afford the publicity of a scratched mission. The plan is to fake the Mars landing and keep the astronauts at a remote base until the mission is over, but then investigative journalist Robert Caulfield starts to suspect something.

Another Z Channel favorite. I never managed to watch it straight through, though. The idea was better than the execution. - @Monday, July 23, 2018 8:06 PM

Always enjoyed this movie, but it has some major (and likely unnecessary) plot holes which detract from the film overall. Plus I would have liked it to have a better resolution at the ending, i.e. how the conspirators were exposed and the fate of the 2 captured astronauts. - @Saturday, June 30, 2018 2:20 PM

they won’t play it on TV no mo cause a OJ’s in it. you kill 1 ex wife, you’re branded for life in this town. - @Wednesday, June 27, 2018 5:53 AM

It is fun! Why didn't the 70's let Karen Black be the hero? She's mansplained out of every scene! OJ was actually good! I saw this when I was 11 it felt like I shouldn't have seen it at the Drive-In as the second feature with "The Spy Who Loved Me" the rest of my family fell asleep after Bond! - @Monday, March 19, 2018 2:45 AM

Yes, this was fun- with a great score, and I had the album! - @Thursday, November 2, 2017 12:29 AM

"Developed a cult following over the years...basically teenage boys who saw it in 1977". That was me. And I absolutely love this movie. - @Saturday, August 5, 2017 2:49 AM

Conspiracy theorists using this movie as evidence that the moon landings were fake just show how baseless and dumb their ideas are. This movie was good fun but as far as the conspiracy itself went it was really paper thin and quickly glossed over. Anyone who insists on using the movie has just about as much analytical skills and Shaquille O'Neill and his flat-Earth brethren. - @Saturday, July 29, 2017 9:38 AM

I think they faked the filming of this movie. So there. - @Friday, June 16, 2017 7:24 AM

A great movie but was too much to cover in a two hour movie, should have been a mini-series. - @Tuesday, April 26, 2016 6:22 AM

I seem to remember a scene in this movie in which the astronauts(on the run) are dividing up the contents of a first aid kit and OJ is not trusted with the knife! - @Friday, February 13, 2015 11:02 PM

"Popular at the time nut job theory"? I saw a so-called "news expose" show on network TV(not some obscure cable channel) in the early 2000s about how the moon landings were faked-with photo evidence and everything! Those nut jobs and their theories are more ubiquitous than ever! And b/c of the technology of hi-def bluray and even dvd, one can easily spot mistakes in 2001, i.e. light reflections on glass panels in outer space etc., its hardly flawless. - @Tuesday, October 14, 2014 9:42 PM

This film was pretty successful at the time (Variety showed it earned about $24,000,000 around the world) and it was promoted a good deal on TV (not just advertising).  So I don't know why it's considered to be a minor cult film. - @Friday, September 26, 2014 6:35 AM

This is one of my favorite films ever! - @Tuesday, April 8, 2014 2:07 AM

MrTired666
I would recommend this film too: however I found re-watching it many years later I was disappointed. It is well made, well paced, good cast that give good performances... I just think watching it much later it had nothing new to offer, unlike a film like the 'Parallax View' that is a conspiracy film with a more complex plot. HOWEVER, if you have never seen this film it is a great example of the post JFK assassination Nixon conspiracy films like 'The Conversation' and 'Three Days Of The Condor.' - @Tuesday, September 10, 2013 3:22 AM

MrWitchman1967
there are a number of plot contrivances in this movie, like elliot gould just happening to step on the small medallion that james brolin left in the sand on the set, the same medallion that brolin used to open the locked door to the room where the astronauts were being held, elliot gould's informant "disappears" inside of 30 seconds and no one notices, brolin losing the gun in the sand, etc... - @Tuesday, September 3, 2013 8:42 PM

MrBazzabee
I think your only fault is that you're calling it "Faults Flag" movie instead of "False Flag". - @Friday, June 21, 2013 5:34 PM

The producers suggest that NASA in this move says 3 men in an Apollo sized capsule make it all the way to mars and back. Sitting on their backs for a total round trip time of 3 years ? Did the producers have a clue? The record for space endurance is half that and done on a space station where they could use special exercises equipment. Those who have been in space for 1 ½ years have had major problems with their bodies. I can understand suspending belief but not to this extent. - @Wednesday, May 22, 2013 8:44 PM

Love this line: "It's an old-school 70s left-wing picture - the government is up to no good and we need the free press to protect us." My how things have changed. - @Tuesday, April 30, 2013 7:17 PM

I love this film! Larry, why is it so strange that this is lumped in the label, "Conspiracy Theory" when I know for a fact Peter Hyams directed, '2010' because he uncovered the fact that Stanley Kubrick had faked the moon landings because of '2001'? He told me Stanley got a free spy satellite lens that he used on 'Barry Lyndon', too. I may not have told you this because he told me this in confidence as did by Ed DiGiulio, when I was a young camera repair tech on Panavision & Arriflex cameras. - @Saturday, April 27, 2013 2:49 AM

I saw this in the theater! - @Saturday, April 27, 2013 12:18 AM

Capricorn One seemed to play on a continuos loop on various pay cable outfits throughout the early 80s. To this day, when I hear the name OJ Simpson, I think about him eating a raw rattlesnake in a cave because of this film. Sure, the double murder - but then beating a snake with a rock and eating it. - @Friday, April 26, 2013 9:03 PM

Conspiracy theories are for idiots. But this film is cool. STAY AWESOME! :) - @Friday, April 26, 2013 4:58 PM

It was on cable not too long ago. It's still a great movie. I don't really believe in faults flag tin hat conspiracy theories. But this is one of those movies that has stayed with me over the years. - @Friday, April 26, 2013 8:15 AM
