CHASING TRANE is the definitive documentary film about an outside-the-box thinker with extraordinary talent whose boundary-shattering music continues to impact and influence people around the world. This smart, passionate, thought-provoking and uplifting documentary is for anyone who appreciates the power of music to entertain, inspire and transform. Written and directed by critically-acclaimed documentary filmmaker John Scheinfeld (The U.S. vs. John Lennon and Who Is Harry Nilsson...?) the film is produced with the full participation of the Coltrane family and the support of the record labels that collectively own the Coltrane catalog. Scheinfeld brings his strong story-telling skills to the creation of a rich, textured and compelling narrative that takes the audience to unexpected places. Set against the social, political and cultural landscape of the times, CHASING TRANE brings John Coltrane to life as a fully dimensional being, inviting the audience to engage with Coltrane the man...

Who's the artist behind the animated paintings on this doc? - @Tuesday, April 24, 2018 6:00 PM

I got to watch this last night. It was pretty much as I expected: the usual photos and clips were trotted out again, plus a number of talking heads. There isn't much in this that most Trane admirers would not already know well. To be fair for the compiler, there isn't much else that he and his team could have done. It didn't really square with the Trane whom I've known on records for about 60 years, and, quite frankly, the film was kinda depressing. Some of the talking heads I greatly respect: Jimmy Heath, Benny Golson and a few others. They knew Trane and their comments were worth hearing. But there were far too many people there who were not involved with Trane at all, and whose comments I resented, basically thinking "Who are you and who cares what you think?". The appearance of that fornicating murderer, Slick Willy, really enraged me, and I skipped over his too frequent comments. There was a weird-looking "philosopher", some rock music nobody, and, inevitably, the mega annoying Marsalis, who seems to poke his unwelcome nose in everywhere these days. All in all, I think it would have been better not to have made this project. It is most certainly NOT "definitive", as the sales blurb would have you believe - @Tuesday, February 20, 2018 10:09 PM

This documentary is about the influence in the power of John coltrane's music on individuals. Whether you're a former president, musician, rap artist, actor, or just a Regular Average Joe who fell in Love with what is truly a Blessing and Love Supreme. - @Tuesday, November 21, 2017 4:21 PM

First off Trump (love him or hate him) has never settled a sexual abuse case out of court. Bill Clinton has. But that is not the point. What sort of authoritative viewpoint on Coltrane does Bill Clinton have? He's irrelevant in this documentary. He's a high school band saxophone owner and that's as far as it goes. Why not fill that time with some of the great sax artists that could use the exposure and would have very important input - @Wednesday, November 15, 2017 3:15 AM

Loved the doc... could have certainly not have seen Bill Clinton in it. Why? Novice musician and a rapist - @Tuesday, November 7, 2017 7:38 AM

reading these comments amazes me.. how many people that listen to jazz... like Coltrane and are not liberal... How can that be? How can you possibly understand what Coltrane was about? How can you understand his addictions? How can you understand what drove him to reach what he did? You cannot be conservative in thought or deed and live inside Coltrane.. you cannot understand reaching further than before if you are conservative in thought. Because at that point... you feel that no one needs go any further and if they do... they are breaking laws or commandments and must be stopped. Conservative.... plays the melody we are all accustomed to... the familiar because there is no need or want to explore and go beyond... Coltrane was always exploring the boundaries and breaking them when he could. He would tease a bit with a melody... but the explorations... that is what it is all about... when its the 13th century... you looked for the new world... In the 1960's, we left earth... If it were up to conservatives, we would still be living in caves and hunting large animals with sticks and stones... - @Sunday, October 29, 2017 7:21 PM

I am looking forward to seeing this. It is sad that it includes clips with that murderous, fornicating slime, Slick Willy, as well as that annoying Marsalis guy. They had nothing to do with Trane. - @Tuesday, July 25, 2017 1:15 PM

There were about ten major losses in the world of music in 1967 And two of them (the other being the legendary Bert Berns) became the subjects of documentary films a half century after the fact. Coltrane's work continues to stagger the imagination. - @Wednesday, May 17, 2017 1:33 AM

Yea, Bill Clinton, how strange, just because he "played" the sax ? - @Tuesday, May 16, 2017 7:36 PM

Music has no boundaries whether it is the color of ones skin or their politics. The greatness is bound the physical plane of little minds. - @Tuesday, May 16, 2017 4:46 AM
