Teenager Darren Shan is an excellent student and the pride and joy of his perfect middle-class family, but his best friend is the reckless Steve. When they receive a flyer with an advertisement for a freak show, they sneak to the theater to see the attractions. The star attraction is a vampire called Larten Crepsley, who performs with a colorful yet very lethal spider. After the show, Darren tarries to see the spider and overhears Steve unsuccessfully trying to convince Larten to transform him into a vampire. Darren steals Larten's spider, which later bites Steve. In seeking an antidote from Larten, Darren accepts a deal to become his half-vampire assistant.

Haven't seen the movie but this was disgraceful! They have pretty much turned the whole plot upside down. Not at all any similar to the books except the fact that Darren turns into a vampire. In the book, it shows that Darren turns Vampire after Steve gets bitten by Madam Octa, Larten's (Vampires) spider he stole. But according to these great directors, it says that Darren becomes a half Vampire just because Larten asks him. Also, during the show, Steve did not tell Darren that Larten was a Vampire. Darren found out as he overheard Steve asking to be a Vampire. They also missed out many other details too, like in the movie you could see the Little People's face (yup that's what they are called), but in the book, no one had ever seen it (except Evra, the snake boy). In addition, after Darrens get dug up, Larten tells him to go and walk around to get rid of the effects of the potion Larten gave Darren to drink. This is where Steve shows up and tells him he is gonna kill both him and Larten when he is older, and will be the best Vampire Hunter. - @Tuesday, August 28, 2018 11:59 AM

The book series are for sure better off as a tv show There's 12 books and it's too long to turn into a movie franchise The only thing I liked were Steve and crepsley I liked josh Hutcherson in this role It would be fantastic if he could be bought back if they remake this goodly I know he's getting older and he's like 23/24 now but Steve doesn't appear as much He shows up at the start as a teen and then appears a few books later as a grown man and with all that Hollywood has it wouldn't be that hard to make someone look younger now Specially if you look at Pretty little liars They are playing teens and the girl that plays Spencer is in her 30s now - @Thursday, September 15, 2016 8:18 PM

Truth is too much goes on in the first 3 books to do it in a movie that won't be 6 hours long. They tried to do the first 3 books in this movie and failed miserably. I believe the right way to do a live action interpretation of the series is a TV show, the first season could cover books 1-2, the next 3-4, then 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, and finally 11-12. This way every season either ends of closes with something big leaving the other half to cool things off a bit but not entirely.
