Two parallel stories are told. In the first, a group of research scientists from a variety of backgrounds are investigating the strange appearance of items in remote locations, primarily desert regions. In continuing their investigation, one of the lead scientists, a Frenchman named Claude Lacombe, incorporates the Kodály method of music education as a means of communication in their work. The response, in turn, at first baffles the researchers, until American cartographer David Laughlin deciphers the meaning of the response. In the second, electric company lineman and family man Roy Neary and single mother Jillian Guiler are among some individuals in Muncie, Indiana who experience some paranormal activity before some flashes of bright lights in the sky, which they believe to be a UFO. Roy becomes obsessed with what he saw, unlike some others, especially in some form of authority, who refuse to acknowledge their belief that it was a UFO in not wanting to appear crazy. That obsession ...

I see this as a trailer trying to get across a complex subject. They explain the varying degrees of First Encounters and then tell you that this is going to be presented to you by some of the best talent Hollywood has to offer. It's certainly unorthodox, I grant you, but really, this is unorthodox stuff they're talking about. How do you get across a movie called "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" in any conventional way? This was the route they took, and from my perspective it makes the film seem mysterious, but not impossible to fully grasp. It lets me know professionals are helming the project, which grabs my confidence. And they also didn't show too much or spoil the movie like some modern trailers often do. It's a unique trailer that did it's best to advertise a film that's pretty damn unique and great in it's own right. - @Tuesday, January 3, 2017 8:27 AM

I remember a shorter version of this trailer where it still had the bright light at the end of the highway. It scared me, I was about 5 at the time. - @Monday, December 5, 2016 10:09 PM

The reason this trailer has a voiceover with such description. Even with Spielberg talking about it. Is that the movie execs felt as though when this came out nobody would know what Close Encounters Of The Third Kind was. They felt the title was confusing. So they just described the story in the trailer. Of course back then it was very uncommon for any spoilers to be in a trailer. Very Unlike today's trailers that sometimes even give plot twist in the film. - @Wednesday, November 2, 2016 12:22 AM

This is INTENDED to be made by this, for idiots who comments that the trailer is garbage. They intended to make it look like a documentary and the "cliffhanger" at the end of the trailer is meant to be the mystery that makes people want to watch it. - @Sunday, September 25, 2016 6:39 AM

They should do a sequel of this movie with actor Jeremy Piven as a young Roy Neary who returns to Earth un-aged and meets his adult children who looks physically older than their father because of space and time / special relativity when traveling in space at the speed of light. Jeremy Piven sort of looks and sounds like Richard Dreyfuss. Other Directors used the idea of the twin paradox in the movie Interstellar and the TV show 4400. - @Wednesday, December 23, 2015 7:17 PM

I guess this sort of trailer worked for its time because they didn't have behind the scenes features or official movie YouTube channels, heck, I don't even think they had specialized movie channels on Cable TV back in those days. So, really, this is the only way anyone got to see things like this. Trailers used to be more than an advertisement for the movie, they were an audiovisual press kit. - @Monday, December 14, 2015 3:30 AM
