To Matthew Robinson and Bersaba: I saw COLORS first-run in the theaters on its opening weekend in October of 1988. The cinema where it played saw a line of capacity crowds around the block from one end of the street to the other. This movie upon its initial release did HUGE business at the boxoffice making it the highest grossing movie in the history of Orion Pictures(which made tons of money with its action movies like "Red Heat", "Robocop", etc.....). for asians in cali theres always been organized crime gangs like the triads and yakuza but street gangs - not to many - in the 80's in Long Beach the ABC or Asian boy crips were around and but were small . more often, asians would be part of a black or hispanic gang back then. for example in Inglewood there are somoans in black gangs. but it's also because this is takes place in LA.
