5.1 / 10

Set in a bloodthirsty Los Angeles, one rogue detective's (Dean S. Jagger) obsessive search for the truth behind his parents' murders leads him to confront a monstrous duo of Queeny (Corey Feldman) and Vince (Richard Wagner) who drag him into a Hellish nightmare he was never prepared for. Lost to an underworld of horrors dating back to the dawn of time, he soon discovers that he is actually the last surviving member of the Nash family, a historic clan of demon hunters. As he is forced to acknowledge a foreboding destiny, he is attacked and brutally left for dead, only to be recovered by Macy (Fernanda Romero), a pure soul who is led by the mysterious Blind Prophet (Malcolm McDowell). At last, Detective Nash is reborn the ultimate killer. Seeking vengeance he wages a violent war on the Beasts that roam the darkness of this world, finally embracing his true legacy - CORBIN NASH, Demon Hunter. Rutger Hauer and Bruce Davison co-star.

SPOILERS BELOW!!! DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE!!! - - - - Misters Jagger, Jagger, and Taylor, I don't want this post to be taken as discouragement but I would like to offer a brief critique. If you enjoy making movies, I encourage you to please keep doing it, but this movie plays out like it was made from the first draft of a screenplay by someone who's never written one before. Malcom McDowell, Cory Feldman, and Rutger Hauer, with their decades of experience in cinematic storytelling, couldn't have offered any feedback? Feedback on dialogue like, "He roughed you up pretty good," dude said -- "He had it coming," Corbin replied -- for example. He had what coming? Him roughing Corbin up pretty good? Almost all of the dialogue and narration in this movie was cringe inducing. Some of it's not terrible but most of it seems like you didn't even give it a second read before rolling cameras on it. My suggestion is, you must have some friends in this industry who know at least a little about storytelling. Let them help you. They want to see you succeed -- I want to see you succeed -- I think you guys just have a little growing to do before you get there. In this movie, there's just things that don't make sense and they're very jarring to the narrative. Why was his dad a World Series Major League Baseball player? Did you think that was necessary to explain why Corbin later uses a stake made from a baseball bat as his weapon of choice? I don't think that was necessary. I would think that most people would think baseball bats would be one of the better readily available pieces of wood around to make a stake from. The idea that his dad would become a Major League Baseball player -- something that's really hard to do -- in order to have a cover for his vampire killing adventures, doesn't really make sense. Baseball players who win the World Series basically become famous. Seems like someone who's a member of an ancient and secret order of vampire hunters would want to keep as low a profile as possible -- pretty much the opposite of having your face plastered on millions of TVs. Why couldn't his dad have been a traveling vacuum salesman or something. That would have fit the bill fine. Rutger Hauer's character was obviously shoehorned in just for the sake of having Rutger Hauer in the movie, which I can understand. He's awesome. But the function that he performed for advancing the plot of the movie, could have easily been played that other guy from the same scene. Malcom McDowell's character seems kinda silly too. He's never really explained but not in a good, "Oooh Mystery", kind of way -- but in the "I honestly don't really care" kind of way. Is he just a "blind" prophet so that one character can deliver the "contrasty/juxtaposey" line, "He sees everything"? That's one of those cringe lines I was talking about. That's one of those lines that sounds clever when you first think of it and perhaps you write it down -- but it's also the kind of line that gets cut out during the first edit pass of the script. And, of course, by the end, he's not just blind and he's not just a prophet, but he's a blind, prophet, vampire, good-guy. I don't really understand what the purpose of any of that is other than just to have the wonderful Malcom McDowell poetically narrate your story. But in the story itself, he's just a guy who sits on a bench and says stuff. It's never explained why he knows things or what his relationship are to the other vampires. I imagine you're hoping to explore this more in the sequel but it's honestly not interesting enough to compel anyone to watch a sequel. Also, are they vampire hunters or demon hunters or both or are vampires a kind of demon in your mythos? I'd suggest fleshing out that world-building before you even begin writing the story -- or at least go back and revise the story as you do. Again, please keep doing this but please continue trying to improve and get those screenplays solid before moving on to production. Ask your friends to help and ask them to be brutally honest with you. No one's doing you any favors by telling you it's great when it's not. - @Monday, August 20, 2018 3:36 AM
