On the spur of the moment, twenty-eight year old Manhattan self-made multi-billionaire Eric Packer decides he wants to get a haircut from his regular and longtime barber across town, a difficult journey today if only because of the traffic gridlock from three high profile but vastly different events taking place in the borough, including a wandering anarchist protest, they who largely use dead rats as their symbol of protest. Through his trek, Eric, most taking place in his stretch limousine, meets with several business associates - some with as esoteric job titles as Head of Theory - and personal acquaintances, including his several week bride, Elise, a wealthy woman in her own right with who he still has a somewhat distant relationship if only because they don't really know each other. The start of Eric's day ends much differently than the end as his personal fortune largely hinges on external forces in relation to a speculative currency transaction, and as he learns that someone is...

This sublime film is perfect viewing for anyone wondering how we got to this new Brexit/Trump era. Chilling, as only Cronenberg could make, and would choose to make, from the Delillo book that most filmmakers would not even dare to attempt to capture. The omnipresent anarchists in Cosmpopolis seem just like the daily protests we are seeing since the Trump inauguration. Highly recommend this flik. For those who hated on it, watch the extras about how complicated and detailed it was to make - Cronenberg is a master at his craft and does not make bad decisions. My impression about this movie is Cronenberg got old. The thing Cronenberg wanted to show is an apocalypse of capitalism. It means a criticism against USA. Surely " yuan" represents a different values from US capitalism. I haven't read an original novel, but I heard It is not a Japanese currency " yen" not Chinese currency " yuan" in an original novel. I think Cronenberg thought Chinese curren ' yuan" has more strong impact than Japanese " yen" now, so he changed. Anyway, obviously he wanted to criticize it ,but he misunderstood about world economy. A bunch of people misunderstand it like him too, China economy is much more capitalistic than US despite China calls itself socialist country. This is a typical misunderstanding of older people. I have one more thing about this movie, but ashamedly my English is terrible, so I can't explain about that. directors formerly called unusual genius like David Lynch, it seems that they get older, they come to want to shot this kind of movie. Ebert had it right. I really like Cronenberg I think he is a genius director, and I think his Crash is a brilliant film. However I think this was a misconceived project. The basic ideas look great on paper, and it could have been an era-defining topical movie with the ingredients, but I think the script and the particularly the source material were lacking in the necessary depth to perform a proper analysis of the things they were investigating. The result is a lot of pretentious waffle that misses the point by a country mile. The final scene was endless and so dull I stopped listening. I got the impression of an older generation trying to understand a new world, or maybe an old world that has existed for a long time but which has been sped up by technology, and which we are all beginning to understand thanks to the Internet, but not having the basic understanding to comprehend it, the writer has merely presented us with superficialities and disjointed, portentous pronouncements, not adding up to any unified scheme of understanding. The worst of these were put into the mouth of Samantha Morton. The actors did a fine job - all of them including Pattinson, individual scenes were great, particularly the "entarteur" But a sad waste of talent of all involved. - @Thursday, March 5, 2015 10:26 AM

The people that comment about dialog in the movie & how it is delivered need to read the book that it was taken from. David Cronenberg took the writing style of Don De Lillo & put it in form of a movie script. That is how the book is & how they are meant to speak. Eric Packer IS a 28 year old BILLIONAIRE after all in New York City. He will have a certain "air" about him that the common person wouldnt have. They discuss currency & most people "common" people (myself included) wouldnt understand in the everyday world. It isnt being "Pretentious" because its their job. Most of these comments that are saying that the movie is bad or that Robert is a bad actor are from MEN! HMMMM... I wonder why that is? Could your wives, girlfriends, or significant others be a fan of Roberts & it makes you men jealous? Well get over it! Cosmopolis is a great movie & if you dont understand, well thats your problem.
