In turn-of-the-century Sweden, cancer-stricken, dying Agnes is visited in her isolated rural mansion by her sisters Karin and Maria. As Agnes' condition deteriorates and pain management becomes increasingly more difficult, fear and revulsion grip the sisters, who seem incapable of empathy, and Agnes' only comfort and solace comes from her maid Anna. As the end draws closer, long repressed feelings of grudging resentment and mistrust cause jealousy, selfishness, and bitterness between the siblings to surface.

I remember watching this when I was quite young and thinking everyone was terribly grown up in it. They all wore black and were full of hate. They had unpleasant, cold-hearted conversations and were married to men so lacking in humanity they sliced their own genitals open with broken glass out of frustration and even a weird kind of pleasure. I realised this was my life too, and always had been, except with no servants and more jaunty hypocrisy. The problem with bad art is that it gives you no room to express the overwhelming evil and real life is generally nothing but bad art. Why? That is one of the worst put questions I have ever heard. Art never has whys, and even less so when it is made with intuition and deep sensibility. This kind of movies make people sleepy when they are insensible to real art. The colors of the film, the rithm it has, the way it is written and the issues it treats are logical answers; the real one is that it is just beautiful.
