Well, as is typical, the original (which I've just watched for the first time ever) is much better than the 1998 remake (which I've seen several times). This version showed David's dysfunctional family dynamic, and society's stigmatization of the mentally ill and the habit we have of 'othering'. Though Lukas Haas did a fair job as 'David' in the remake, Keir Dullea really nailed the obsessive-compulsive behaviors and the condescension as defense against vulnerability and fear. Brittany Murphy always seemed to 'fit' the roles of mentally disturbed girls, and while I thought her words like 'foolish' and 'squawking' (and lack of profanity) seemed dated, I chalked it up to that choice being made to suit the typical Oprah-family-friendly-and-slightly-sugary demographic. Now I see that Janet Margolin said pretty much the same things, so the 1998 film's writers were being loyal to the original dialogue. Great casting here, and while some of the theories and the approaches to treatment are no doubt considered dated or unrealistic by some viewers, it must have been an intriguing film in 1962. It's a refreshing change from the bleak depictions of straightjacketed deranged teen girls being forcibly sedated or thrashing around in padded rooms that seemed so exploitative over the years. Just a school for emotionally disturbed young people, where they are encouraged to study and play and be creative while working through their problems. And this is totally irrelevant, but I found it funny that the girl who complimented David's dress style added, 'Not like the rest of these slobs' or something similar. I really hate America's current slob culture, and love the way people dressed back then, and prior to the late 60's! - @Wednesday, August 29, 2018 5:49 PM

I have tactile defensiveness like David and I feel exactly the way he does. To touch or be touched on the spectrum with no medication is so horrific and I get so sad upset during some of simplest physical acts. - @Friday, April 27, 2018 2:43 AM

In subdivx there are several subtitles in Spanish for this movie, does anyone know which are the ones that would fit with this version? I do not want to have to download them all? Yes, I understand very little English when I hear it, so I need subtitles. - @Wednesday, November 1, 2017 4:46 AM

well 7 Minute in or so I changed my mind this movie is going to be a downer. and what a very nice facility by that time in the 50s I find that disingenuous. either way this movie is a downer I can tell that was in 10 minutes. Good looks for those who hang in there and watch it I have no interest that along with the comments a real Downer!!!! with that being said I like to say good luck to those who suffer with any mental illness they obviously can't help it and yes I have a strong faith in God and I imagine you struggle if you have schizophrenia or multiple personality you have a hard time dealing with God you don't know which one is dealing with who. so I don't want to sound non empathetic or sympathetic. but I'll skip this one good luck to all!!! I think Autumn Leaves was pretty good even though I think Joan Crawford put up with a hell of a lot. and they glaze that movie over quite a bit because you know that was a living hell!!! The same way things are going to do here. - @Tuesday, October 24, 2017 9:53 AM

keeping this one on light note, the gentleman playing the lead role he is quite a dynamic actor I've seen him in several films and he plays a good nut!!! I've never seen this phone but I'm going to watch it. The comments we're very heartfelt regarding mental illness. but like I said on the lighter note it's a movie. and the onus should not be trivialized on any level but this is a movie. and the fact that you can call it whatever you want but it is paranoid schizophrenia. just give it a nice name like bipolar. it reminds me of a Joan Crawford movie Autumn Leaves. one thing you know they made movies regarding this mental illness. so at least they tried and brought attention to the fact the people suffer the family suffer and the seriousness of the diagnosis. I 41 went to keep this on a light note. this actor not sure of his name as I said please look great cuckoo. and you've got to give them credit he acted his ass off. and just keep in mind it's a movie a dramatization whether based on a character that is real or not, the fact is the stories being told just one probably fictional. that is why everybody enjoys psycho the movie. - @Tuesday, October 24, 2017 9:41 AM
