In a world 10 years into the future, vampires make up the vast majority of the population with only 5% of the human race remaining. This presents particular challenges as the vampires' food supply - human blood - is dwindling and rationing is now the norm. There is growing evidence that vampires deprived of an adequate blood supply are themselves evolving into wild, vile creatures that attack anyone and anything in order to survive. Dr. Edward Dalton, a vampire and hematologist who works for a pharmaceutical firm, has been working on finding an artificial blood supply that will meet the vampire society's needs. He is sympathetic to humans and sees his work as a way of alleviating their suffering but his views on finding a solution change considerably when he meets someone who found a way to transform himself from being a vampire to again take human form.

Daybreakers was an extremely innovative movie, moreso than True Blood, and more along the lines of Walking Dead or similar zombie apocalypse movies. The world has been taken over by a vampire plague; once someone is bitten by a vampire, that person becomes a vampire - human in every aspect except (1) must drink human blood, and (2) cannot bear sunlight (other differences are probable but not discussed). So cities are now converted, buildings hardly have windows, people function during daytime by moving through tunnels, in cars using TV cameras insteads of windshields, working indoors without windows, etc. Non-vampire humans are hunted and caged, farmed for blood, and as the world runs out of human sources of blood it means that vampires will soon starve. To prep for this movie, the writers and producers used the internet to solicit ideas of what a civilization of sun-avoiding vampires would look like. - @Thursday, May 5, 2016 7:02 AM

If I had to choose between Vampires and Humans in the Daybreakers world, I'd choose the Humans any day. 'Elvis' is right in this film: "Vampires can never survive. That's the truth" I mean, look at the facts: 1. Vampires can't go out in daylight, yet Humans can 2. Vampires will deteriorate and become monsters without blood in this film, and Humans don't need blood to drink. 3.Vampires can easily be killed by the slightest stab/arrow shot as seen in this, Humans can take excessive amounts before going down, as seen when Jars in tranquillised once, he still fights, and needs another dart to go down. - @Tuesday, October 7, 2014 3:44 PM

Ethan Hawke is so underrated, i think he would make an excellent BATMAN, it should be looked into if Christian Bale no longer wants the role...Sam Neil wouldn't make a bad Joker either. My wife and I think this movie is genius. At first it seems like Gattaca with Vampires, which isn't bad, just you have to wonder if its taking itself too seriously. Then Willem Dafoe shows up and you realize its not. Then the ending with all that...well I don't want to give it away, but it was hilarious. Great film with interesting storyline. Ethan Hawke and Claudia Karvan made a very cool screen duet.
