Adam wingard. The only road to continue the death note is to have light write his fathers name on the note and give up the ownership to join L. That way he can make the case that mia was the first kira and his father will be hypnotized by the note and lose his memory until the time of his death which was written by light on the note before he pass the ownership and and lose His memory too. "I always thought that if I was ever going to adapt anything into a movie, that I SHOULD DO DEATH NOTE." No Adam, you really shouldn't have. Especially when you didn't even understand the fundamental premise of the story. For clearance, I didn't even watch the entire film. I've only seen the one scene that they released early to promote the release, the scene where Ryuk appears for the first time. And that scene was all I needed to know that the people behind this had no clue what they were doing. Not because of the stupid screaming, not because of the acting, but because Ryuk hands Light the notebook and provokes him to use it. Because of this simple thing they demonstrated they didn't understand the characters or the premise of the story. In the original, Light has on his own accord written several pages worth of names before he even knows about Ryuk's existence. He discovered and started to use it on his own, and justified it by the means of his own philosophy and outlook of the world. Ryuk was always just a bystander, an observer. He never was the devil on the shoulder whispering into his ear, telling him what to do. If Light isn't acting on his own accord, justifying his actions with his own philosophy - then the entire fucking premise of the story unravels into shit. His entire journey to becoming Kira means nothing. Instead, Adam wanted to make a film about giving the ultimate power to some teenager. I'm about to go insane from all the negative comments. Okay so look, Wingard was trying to make a Death Note movie that WASN'T supposed to be exactly like the anime/manga. Sure this movie had its faults, but he said it himself that the movie was set up to be a origin story for Light to become the Light we know in the original source material. I'll say it right here and now, i LOVED this movie. I will continue to watch more and more of the DN Netflix universe Wingard has to offer. You all also have to take in to account that both the Author and Illustrator of Death Note loved this version as well and would have loved to write Death Note like the version Wingard envisioned.
