Disobedience - Jewish ' hollywood ' journey to Freedom Dear Friends, here is an account of a Hollywood film ' Disobedience ' 2017. It is produced by Rachel Weisz, an british actress who herself is a jew.I bumped across this film to watch Rachel Mc Adams who is a superb canadian actress who is one of actors\ress who speaks by her face and needs no words to convey the feelings of the characters she plays. She thoruogly enters the characters with best control on herself. Now I turn to story line - the story is about 2 girls who are born and brought up in orthodox Jewish families closely connected. Weisz's father being late religious leader and McAdam's hubby his close disciple. The two Rachels have different sexual inclination. Weisz overturns the bindings and Mc Adams stays in unwilling marriage, saying - my society \ religion does not allow me to CHOSE. They come to physical and emotional intimacy which is criticized by all. When Mc Adam's hubby is being crowned as new leader of synagogue, he declines to be so and reiterates his Guru who also backed the necessity of FREE WILL and tells Mc Adams his wife that she is FREE... watch out the end yourself. Mc Adams is second in importance of the film but has expressed the emotions of a lady in a fix extremely well. She is once again just ' superb '. [ Please note - film is adult and contains little explicit shots in it. ] We as Hindus or Christians have seen changes in orthodox thoughts and practices, freedom of thoughts, changes according to time in wake of Humanity; watch them here in Jewdism too.Changes start with disobedience sometimes! for those interested, these are the most significant differences between the film and the book, in my opinion: - In the book, Ronit didn't actualy run away from London. Her father sent her to study in NY when she was 17 because he thought she could be happier studying there. She used to return to London on vacations, but she stop going back after a while. For that reason, she didn't "disappeared", and talked to Dovid sometimes, though when her father died they didn't spoke for 6 years; - Ronit didn't show up at Dovid's house unexpectedly. Actualy, Dovid invited her to come, not Esti; - Ronit didn't left London because her father found out about her and Esti, and she was not exiled because of her sexuality. In fact, no one in London knew about their relationship, except for Dovid, who knew but didn't tell them. Esti confessed her desires to the Rav when she was a girl. Still, Ronit thinks her father didn't quit know that Esti and her used to make out; - Dovid is Ronit's cousin, and lived in Manchester before he married. He went to london only on vacations to study wit the Rav. He and Ronit were close, though, and afterwards Esti joined the team, when they were still teenagers ; - Ronit works as a financial analist in NY, not as a photographer; - Esti was not very welcome in the community. Everyone thought she was weird and didn't like her very much, specially beacuse she was cold and silent. Her marriage with Dovid was not very great, considering that she treated him cold-heartly, but it seems he did love her; - Ronit was dating a married man in the beginning of the book. She had seen other women in NY before, though; - Ronit's mother died when she was 4, and she didn't have a sister who also died, as mentioned in the film; - The whole film happens in seven days. In the book, Ronit stays in London for almost a month; - Their personalities changes a lot, too. Ronit is angry, rispid. She hates ortodox jewish rules. She has clearly an issue missolved with her father and with her community. Esti is cold and distant. In the movie, they both are very deep and sensitive characters, both struggling with their own troubles, suffering in their own way. The manner they face their problems in the book is more superficial. Thats my opinion, anyway. Dovid, in contrast, is very sweet, insecure and sympathetic. He doesn't want to be the next Rav and tries to do everything is possible to avoid that; - Ronit and Esti first kissed and did stuff when they were 13; - The book's ending is very disappointing. Esti decides to stay in London with Dovid and live a married live, despite everything she had passed throught and despite all her feelings. - @Sunday, August 26, 2018 5:41 PM

I loved the movie, I watched it twice, and then I decided to read the book. Oh, how disappointing. The film and the book are very different in many ways, and Disobedience is one of the films that is actually better than the book. There are HUGE differences between them, but the most significant one and the most disappointing was the book's ending: Esti makes a great speech at the Rav's hesped, coming out to the whole community, assuming she's indeed a lesbian and still, decides to be with Dovid anyway. She stays married to him and becomes a a Rabbi's wife. One year after the Rav's death, Ronit goes back to London and finds them with their little baby boy and they are happy, as far as possible. Wtf. That was a very conservative ending, considering that Esti spends the whole book trying to understand and accept her sexuality, and we can see that she treats Dovid cold-heartedly. Everyone in the community sees that too, gossiping around. Then, she made a pass at Ronit, kissed her, said that she had been waiting for her to return since forever and now that the Rav was dead they could finally live together. She has even confessed her desires to the Rav when he was alive, and afterwards she admits to Ronit that she only fancies women and not men. In that momment, they hug each other and Ronit tells her to leave to New York, she tries to show Esti that her marriage could be toxic to her. Esti seems to understand what Ronit is trying to say. AND THEN, AT THE HESPED, SHE CONFESS TO THE EVERYONE IN THE SYNAGOGUE SHE'S GAY BUT WHATEVER, SHE SAYS IT'S POSSIBLE TO LIVE IN THE COMMUNITY WITH HER HUSBAND ANYWAY AND SHE CAN PUT UP WITH THAT AS LONG AS SHE DOESN'T NEED TO KEEP THAT A SECRET. REALLY?? There's even a paragraph after that in which Ronit reflects upon the subject of being and practicing who you are. So, the message, for me, is: okay, you can be gay and thats something you can't change, but what you can do is to choose to practice your gayness or repress it to follow religious standarts. Esti, besides all she felt and all the troubles she had passed throught by repressing her sexuality, chose the last option to maintain her marriage. She didn't bear the pressure and chose to follow a very strict and religious life insted of following her heart. She did not permite herself to love. That's why I felt it was a very conservative ending. Thank god they changed it in the movie. - @Sunday, August 26, 2018 4:59 PM
