One night of 1881, Doc Holliday, a famous poker gambler, enters the 'No Name Saloon'. There, he challenges a man to poker, betting his horse against his opponent's fiance. Doc wins and from now on, Katie Fisher, also known as Katie Elder, will follow him wherever he goes. Their next destination is Tombstone, where the law is represented by Sheriff Wyatt Earp. When they arrive, the election campaign is in full swing. Earp runs for candidate but the Clantons, a family gang of outlaw cowboys, are not among his keenest supporters. Conflict erupts following the failure of some shadowy bargaining and Doc decides to join Wyatt and his brothers. The four of them gather at the O.K. Corral where the seven Clanton brothers are waiting for them.

I read the novelization of the film before the film had even hit theaters. Never did get around to seeing Doc until almost 47 years after it's release. Oh, Doc is no Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957); instead it paints the two principal, iconic figures as anti-heroes. Since this film was released at the height of the war in Vietnam the inclination to unwind and trash the mythos behind Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday was in vogue. Just four years earlier John Sturges (also directed Gunfight at the O.K. Corral) painted a different portrait of the Wyatt Earp legend in The Hour of the Gun (1967). My take: See all of the films of the 'species' as there's no less than five outstanding movies which deal with the subject matter very well. - @Friday, March 2, 2018 12:57 PM

children could be looking at trailers and see a lot of violence, such as in this one. why cannot they censor trailers? if people want to see sin, sex, violence, you name it, let them buy or rent the movie disc. but trailers should be aimed at family audiences, please. now, this, is the john wayne katie elder movie a sequel to this? or could one call this a prequel to the wayne movie? does one film make reference to the other in the dialogue? just curious. - @Monday, September 30, 2013 10:50 PM
