A British Squad is sent on a training mission in the Highlands of Scotland against Special Operations squad. Ignoring the childish "campfire" stories heard about the area, they continue with their mission and come across the bloody remains of the Special Ops Squad, and a fierce howling is pitching the night sky... With two mortally wounded men, they make an escape, running into a zoologist by the name of Megan - who knows exactly what hunts them. What began as what they thought was a training mission turns into a battle for their lives against the most unlikely enemies they would have expected - werewolves.

They could have very easily done a successful sequel, perhaps with the surviving soldier, a year or two later, now leading his own squad of men, under orders to verify that the werewolf threat is over, or something along those lines. As well done as this movie was, I definitely would have watched a sequel. Alas, this was released in 2002, the time for any kind of successful sequel is long, long past. siege movies are always cinema friendly and one of the best is "Zulu" with Michael Caine so its easy to see why writer and director of Dog Soldiers would want to use the structure of that film and give a nod to the scenes and dialogue from Zulu but replace Rorkes Drift with a remote cottage in Scotland and replace the Zulus with huge scary werewolves!! It works because the director is giving a fond homage to that earlier movie and portrays the relentless edge of seat attacks of an enemy that just keeps coming at you regardless of what you throw at them, Dog Soldiers is a very well made movie, it is bloody terrifying and the army black humour is hilarious, the trailer here doesn't do the film justice at all, its a really good werewolf movie and the werewolves are truly scary due to the fact that they are big bastards standing up like humans and they are not CGi generated so there is a reality to them that is apparently lost on so many CGi filmakers today. - @Friday, October 31, 2014 5:54 PM
