Action Comedy War

8.4 / 10

Paranoid Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper of Burpelson Air Force Base, believing that fluoridation of the American water supply is a Soviet plot to poison the U.S. populace, is able to deploy through a back door mechanism a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union without the knowledge of his superiors, including the Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Buck Turgidson, and President Merkin Muffley. Only Ripper knows the code to recall the B-52 bombers and he has shut down communication in and out of Burpelson as a measure to protect this attack. Ripper's executive officer, RAF Group Captain Lionel Mandrake (on exchange from Britain), who is being held at Burpelson by Ripper, believes he knows the recall codes if he can only get a message to the outside world. Meanwhile at the Pentagon War Room, key persons including Muffley, Turgidson and nuclear scientist and adviser, a former Nazi named Dr. Strangelove, are discussing measures to stop the attack or mitigate its blow-up into an all ...

I was never - and still am not - a great fan of Robin Williams. For me, he had too much of a 'Me - its all about ME!' attitude in his work, but listening to him here, I can see that the man had a great deal of humility too. RIP, Mr. Williams........ - @Monday, October 15, 2018 12:12 AM

Sellers was crazy like Williams and started as an impressionist. One person he used to do was Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan) from a 50s film in which he played eight separate members of the same family, clearly had a huge influence on Peter’s decision to emulate a hero of his and so work with Kubrick. Would love it if there was surviving footage of Sellers playing the Slim Pickens role. He was deeply troubled his accent was unconvincing so faked a broken leg to get out of having to do four roles! - @Tuesday, August 14, 2018 11:09 PM

I wonder if 'Strangelove' was written with the knowledge that one actor would play three roles? - @Saturday, July 14, 2018 5:35 PM

"The first time we saw people suffering from 'Waldheimers'" - that fantastic distillation that was Robin's mind in free flight, performing surgery with comedy to get at the marrow of the matter. - @Saturday, June 30, 2018 10:27 PM

The best and funniest Peter Sellers Movie was also the most underrated...."Being There:. I saw it when I was 14....two days later in English class it hit me and I was sent from the room because I couldn't stop laughing. My English Mistress was about to take me to the Principal, but has the presence of mind to ask what I was laughing about.....When I told about the movie she instead sent me to the library to read. Im now 54 and the phrase "I like to watch" immediately sends me into hysterics. - @Tuesday, June 19, 2018 11:05 AM

marrying that awful third wife...leaving his second wife for her...and buying some vineyard estate that cost a fortune every month in upkeep and taxes etc...he buried himself...the big money movie paydays were over and he had to take a fucking sitcom cause he needed the money and that lousy show got cancelled quickly...stress lowers your immune system...which i believe played a part in his physical and emotional down fall...plus his yin yang was so out of balance...RIP - @Sunday, May 20, 2018 3:37 AM

When Peter was asked about the characters in Strangelove, he obviously cited the man himself, a barely restrained and sometimes unrestrained muscle memory causing semi-involuntary Hitler salutes (perhaps one of the finest bits of comedy ever committed to film. Mandrake he loved because he was reminiscent of so many officer types he met (and pretended to be) towards the end of the bally mess. Seemingly the only sane man in a cadre of crazies, Sellers' Mandrake is a gorgeous blend of stiff upper lip Englishness, barely restrained desperation, a note of cowardice and a beautifully layered conveyance that his demise may come, not just at the hands of Ripper, but a broken bureaucracy compounded by the resistance of another nutter in the form of equally ranked Col Bat Guano. The other character, President Muffley, tends to be overlooked, even by Sellers. But his phone call with the Soviet head honcho Dimitri Kissov is magical. - @Tuesday, December 5, 2017 10:51 AM

Every actor I know and know of with a deep desire to lose themselves in a character without using big M 'Method' as their vehicle in has Sellers as an integral touchstone. Usually those actors who 'use' and cite Sellers either have a gift for improvisation or they develop it. Sellers is notable as an actor for so many reasons, but the one relevant to this is that Kubrick, famously meticulous, knew that the magic he wanted from Sellers was ultimately achieved by letting Peter play. I am ambivalent about Sellers the man, but as an actor, he was lightning in a bottle. - @Tuesday, December 5, 2017 10:29 AM

Robin was right on the money with this one. Peter Sellers is probably my favorite comedian ever. The stuff he did was pure comic genius. - @Tuesday, December 5, 2017 7:52 AM

It is still simultaneously difficult and painful to watch Robin; yet it is pleasurable to enjoy hearing some of the depth of his intellectual prowess as he mentions--almost in passing--Waldheimer [Kurt Josef Waldheim, the ultimate turncoat during WWII]. - @Saturday, October 7, 2017 7:50 PM

God Speed, R.W. I agree that Peter Sellers was one of the greatest actors. He certainly was the greatest never to receive an 'Academy' Award. He certainly deserved one for 'Being There'. - @Monday, May 8, 2017 5:41 AM

The scene in Doctor Strangelove he references, where Sterling Hayden is talking about purity of essence and how he denies women his essence, then there's a shot of Sellers as Mandrake and he's kind of shuddering, realizing Ripper is out of his mind, and almost under his breath, "Heheh, yes, Jack, yes." It's a short sequence but it's a good one - Sellers just nails it. - @Friday, October 21, 2016 7:18 AM

One of the greatest tragedies this poor world has ever seen. Unfortunately, we will never get over his loss it's too big. I'm sorry if I should pessimistic, but he was loved that much. If he's in a better place, then he now truly knows how the world misses him. And he regrets ever doing it. Hope he’s finally found peace. - @Sunday, July 5, 2015 7:08 PM

I said fora long time that Robin Williams was the closest thing to a Peter Sellers for his generation.  But later I felt that didn't give Williams enough credit and originality, as he was very clearly his own thing and did things that only he could do. - @Tuesday, October 21, 2014 3:37 PM

It's a satire - a product of the Cold War moment in which it was made. There was real, almost palpable fear in the air that world could be destroyed at any moment by one of the Super Powers. Dr. Strangelove lampoons what to us seems to be the decision making process on the top level. After a little research in this area, and, perhaps, after watching FAIL SAFE (which took this subject very seriously), watch it again. You will probably develop a new appreciation for it. - @Friday, August 23, 2013 4:36 PM
