Detroit, the early 1960s. Curtis Taylor, Jr., a car salesman, breaks into the music business with big dreams. He signs a trio of young women, the Dreamettes, gets them a job backing an R&B performer, James "Thunder" Early, establishes his own record label and starts wheeling and dealing. When Early flames out, Curtis makes the Dreamettes into headliners as the Dreams, but not before demoting their hefty big-voiced lead singer, Effie White, and putting the softer-voiced looker, Deena Jones, in front. Soon after, he fires Effie, sends her into a life of proud poverty, and takes Deena and the Dreams to the top. How long can Curtis stay there, and will Effie ever get her due?

They didn't give Jennifer Hudson enough credit. Her character was the main vocal point in the movie and it's ridiculous that she didn't get the credit she deserved. She did win an Oscar for best supporting actress, but I felt like she should've gotten an Oscar for best actress. From re watching the trailer, it does not do the movie any justice. They make Effie (Jennifer Hudson's) character seem like not a big character of the film and her journey is such a focal part of the movie. They were focusing so much on the fact that Beyonce was in the film and made it appear her story is the main plot of it all. Also in the credits of actors, they don't even mention like an "Introducing Jennifer Hudson" just only Jamie Fox, Beyonce, and Eddie Murphy. I mean i understand somewhat cause Hudson wasn't really a name then but I mean come on. Kinda brings up further discussion of why Hudson's role was demoted to "Supporting Actress" instead of "Lead Actress". But the final product is amazing! I didn't get into this one or Joyful Noise. I think "What's Love..." about Tina Turner is a much better film. There's a hundred music docs that are phenomenal. "Thunder Soul," "Tradition is a Temple," about New Orleans jazz...I'll even even go "It Might get Loud," about Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin legendary guitarist), The Edge (U2) and Jack White. To see where "When the Levee Breaks" was recorded to get that drum sound alone was worth it. "Song Remains the Same," "The Wall..." I'm sure I'm missing a lot of them. Gene Krupa Story...I like movies I'll learn a great deal from on each viewing and remember each song a week after I hear it. If not a lifetime. JMO. I don't get the attraction of things that come out now at all. I studied voice, keyboards, drums, bass and guitar. I'm a professional singer.
