The first time I watched the movie about 10years back it was to see the wonderful locales, idea of a travel movie looked interesting. Let's not forget this is a movie they will make it larger than life to get the audiences. Who would want to see someone travel on a shoe string budget on the big screen so we have to allow some room for the creative liberties. However when I saw this movie again after 10 years my perspectives changed. I saw the profound messages that the movie has to offer about life. The most important being "love yourself". You need not travel the world or be materialistic. Just be comfortable in your own skin don't seek approvals from others about how you wish to live your life. It's seems easy but I guess it's not easy to just be in love with yourself. The 2nd message is make genuine attempts to help people around you. Don't just lip service be there for them physically emotionally financially. If you are the reason for someone to smile, am sure you will smile a lot yourself. I have mixed feelings about this book and movie now. You watch it and I think everyone can relate in terms of trying to find their purpose in life. The movie ends making you think she figured it out- well as best as she could. In life you’re always growing and changing. Years later she divorces him for a woman. A friend of hers who has been in her life way before she went on this journey of self discovery. I’m not judging. To each his own. Everyone should do what makes them happy, but I wonder if that’s why she needed the trip to begin with. She wasn’t being totally honest with herself in which case I feel like she sold me a lie. This movie makes you want to travel the world and her answer was really deep within. She didn’t need trips to 3 countries to validate that for her. I’m just wondering. Women are constantly trying to one up each other by moving up the pecking order, traveling to exotic and famous places is a big way to do that. 2. To escape responsibility. Visiting a foreign country gives women access to as much consequence free sex as they want without hurting their reputation back home. Hate to sound like an asshole but unless you are taking care of someone financially that cannot support themselves you have no excuse to complain. It doesn't cost lots to travel - I do it all the time and I am terrible at saving money. I work hard, paid off my loans, moved out, got a real job and now travel. If you complain you have kids, guess what you had plenty of time before that to travel so your fault. People who complain would rather their $6 coffee every day than a small sacrifice. I know once I have kids, buy a house that's out the window so I'm doing it at 22 like someone with common sense. And prior to moving out I paid my parents rent and groceries - rest of the money I invested in furniture and clothes so I wouldn't be struggling when I wanted to travel while living on my own.
