(Spoiler Alert) To me this movie is about a highly functional psychopath and the moral compass which ought to be in all of us. Michele is the daughter of a serial killer. The suspicion is that she partook to some of his killings. I suspect that she was the one who killed the animals, which is why the acknowledgement of their killing is such a big deal to her. The contrast is between Michele (psychopath) and genuinely evil individuals. Michele is surrounded by genuinely evil individuals, who at some point or another are genuinely capable of feeling pain, betrayal, and guilt; Michele on the other hand feels none of that. Michele has learnt faint or mimic normality; she acts as if she can feel pain, guilt, and remorse for what her father did (she probably had to learn to fake it to survive the scrutiny of her psychologists). Nonetheless, Michele's response to certain awkward situations is more often an act than an organic response. This is why her best friend forgives her at the end.
