Action Drama Sci-Fi

7.3 / 10

Based on the 1951 Ray Bradbury novel of the same name. Guy Montag is a firefighter who lives in a lonely, isolated society where books have been outlawed by a government fearing an independent-thinking public. It is the duty of firefighters to burn any books on sight or said collections that have been reported by informants. People in this society including Montag's wife are drugged into compliancy and get their information from wall-length television screens. After Montag falls in love with book-hoarding Clarisse, he begins to read confiscated books. It is through this relationship that he begins to question the government's motives behind book-burning. Montag is soon found out, and he must decide whether to return to his job or run away knowing full well the consequences that he could face if captured.

The primary reason they may have pushed this as a love story (which really misses the point of the film) is that while the US production code was still in place for American made films, but in 1966, the code was nearly uninforcable with foreign films, which were more likely to feature sex and nudity . . . and thus, a lot of people went to them simply to see what they could not see in a US film. Julie Christie had just won an Academy Award for playing a decadent woman in another British film, so this is really about marketing not content. - @Thursday, September 24, 2015 6:51 PM

Warts and all, I still love this flawed, clumsy movie which nonetheless has some extraordinary sequences: the spoken main titles, the scene where Montag, our protagonist, begins to read "David Copperfield", the whole sequence with the book lady who chooses to die like Joan at the stake, the frightening images of books burning (their pages seem to wilt and blacken in pain), the hopeful ending in the snow, Ray Bradbury's book was practically re-written by Francois Truffaut and Jean-Louis Richard (and Bradbury was displeased by the changes), but what's striking is that this was a film obviously made by someone who deeply loved books. Bernard Herrmann music is beautiful and heartbreaking. - @Saturday, September 13, 2014 7:40 PM

Fahrenheit 451. You'll know everyone whose in it, but nothing of what its about. Everyone will be talking about it, and you'll have no knowledge of it other than that it has something to do with flying fireman from the future dealing with a schizophrenic actress. Go watch it! - @Saturday, August 24, 2013 12:51 AM

Sounds like this film does away with everything that makes the book memorable in my mind (and the minds of others). Guess that's why the book IS still memorable, and this film is NOT at all. - @Wednesday, April 17, 2013 8:34 AM

I wish they would remake the movie, I mean that was the 1960's, If we made one today it would be a lot cooler and think about the scene where Montag was getting chased by the police with the jet packs on the river, I laughed so hard. Plus they didn't mention the Mechanical Hound and Professor Faber. Man I wish this movie was redone. - @Wednesday, January 9, 2013 10:17 PM

I dunno...there seemed to be the slightest hint that Clarisse had a crush on Guy. And from Guy's reactions to her, the way he thought of her, especially when he imagined her toward the end...I could see an attraction vibe there. - @Friday, June 8, 2012 5:25 AM

No more of an age gap than Rhett and Scarlett. (Maybe a bad example, considering how that turned out.) Or Jane and Mr. Rochester. - @Friday, June 8, 2012 5:20 AM
