It's the early twentieth century Sweden. Adolescent siblings Alexander and Fanny Ekdahl lead a relatively joyous and exuberant life with their well-off extended paternal family, led by the family matriarch, their grandmother, Helena Ekdahl. The openness of the family culture is exemplified by Helena's now deceased husband ending up becoming best friends with one of her lovers, a Jewish puppet maker named Isak Jacobi, and their Uncle Gustav Adolf's open liaison with one of the family maids, Maj, who everyone in the family adores, even Gustav Adolf's wife, Alma. Between the siblings, Alexander in particular has inherited the family's love of storytelling, his parents and his grandmother who are actors and who manage their own theater. Things change for Alexander and Fanny when their father, Oscar, dies shortly after Christmas 1907. Although she truly does believe she loves him, the children's mother, Emilie, decides to marry Bishop Edvard Vergérus, who she first met as the officiate at ...

People who think this movie sucks have a bad taste in film. Also they probably think "The Notebook" is the best movie ever made... - @Monday, December 25, 2017 8:11 PM

The most pretentious thing I think I've ever seen/heard. The lunar landings were not greeted with such acclaim, nor hosannas greeted any messiah than this trailer rained down on Fanny and Alexander. No slight to the film, but it was not the end all be all of my existence. - @Sunday, December 10, 2017 6:13 AM

Always has to be one... this is such a remarkable film that just screams Christmas to me more than even A Christmas Story or Its a Wonderful Life... It is just so exuberant... Its got the devastation Bergman always gives us, but we get a pseudo happy ending which he NEVER gives. Great magnum opus for one of our finest filmmakers ever - @Friday, August 30, 2013 12:49 AM

This movie sucks. Investing 3 hours would ensue disappointment for most people. That is because there is really no underlying, profound concept to embrace. Although, through some ambiguities in the film, you can almost fabricate them, I find that the great dependence on acting and cheap intensity to be unfulfilling. I wouldn't rate this higher than 3/5 - @Saturday, April 27, 2013 3:18 PM

Yes it was so much fun!:D We did it back in March and we were sold out:) The director said that we were really good and we had close contact with the official Ingmar Bergman organisation during the entire thing:D - @Monday, July 2, 2012 9:30 PM

That sounds like so much fun! Did the show went well? - @Sunday, July 1, 2012 6:11 PM

Probably one of the best "evil stepfather that tries to break the kids will" films out there. Great film, I would compare it to another similar epic scaled movie that just came out recently called "In The Family". Really good child actors in both. bitly. com/ H f K Eu p - @Friday, April 13, 2012 7:23 PM

“Everything can happen. Everything is possible and probable. Time and space do not exist. On a flimsy framework of reality, the imagination spins, weaving new patterns.” I am very happy that I own the Artificial Eye dvd of this film. Wonderful release. - @Tuesday, February 28, 2012 1:01 PM

I saw this when I was young. I couldn't stand 3+ hour films, but I looked at this thanks to the Z Channel. This is one of my all time favorite foreign films. I will admit I had to watch it a few times (there's a 3 hour version and a shorter one), but it reminded me so much of all those old classic Hawthorne and Dickens books we had to read in High School. This film has all those elements. - @Sunday, June 26, 2011 6:21 AM

Does anyone else think the main boy character in this film looks like Skandar Keynes? - @Sunday, May 8, 2011 2:56 PM

This film is like a classic Dickens novel.. The rite of passage of a child moving out of innocence and into the often tough, unjust real world. - @Tuesday, May 3, 2011 11:11 PM

I have to say, I dont really think I would be moved by this hokey trailer to see this film. Actually I have already seen it, a few times. It is very dark, mysterious, hard to watch. Beautiful too. Oh, and Bergman's loathing of religion gets a good airing; not something an American trailer is going to say. Is it? - @Monday, September 27, 2010 4:50 PM

Very good preview. Have it on tape but haven't watched yet. Heard its splendid, and I hope so given it was Ingmar's last theatrical feature. Although his tv film "Sarabande" did get limited cinema release and I saw it on the big screen. Thanks for posting! - @Monday, August 31, 2009 12:59 AM
