The first half follows a group of recruits in boot camp under the command of the punishing Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. The second half shows one of those recruits, Joker, covering the war as a correspondent for Stars and Stripes, focusing on the Tet offensive.

The best film I've ever seen that has Vietnam as a focus is the documentary Frontline, the debut feature by David Bradbury. It is Vietnam through the lens, quite literally, of cameraman and photojournalist Neil Davis. Some of the most iconic and disturbing footage from Vietnam was brought to us by Neil, who preferred to travel with the south Vietnamese troops, although he did shoot some pretty startling footage of Americans. In the last few weeks I've been revisiting the Vietnam-based movies of the late 1980's, inc Platoon, Hamburger Hill, Good Morning Vietnam, Born on the Fourth of July, the peerless documentary about Neil Davis, Frontline by David Bradbury and, of course, Full Metal Jacket. By sheer and complete coincidence, I watched Full Metal Jacket on the day Lee Ermey shuffled off this mortal coil. Oddly, I didn't find out he had died till about ten minutes ago, looking at the Wikipedia entry for the movie The Watch, of all things. And I went through my viewing history to see what date I watched FMJ. Bang on, same day, which would be weird if coincidences didn't exist. I prefer to think of it as a nice poetic coincidence and now, a retrospective, unintended tribute. _"Marines die. That's what we're here for.
