Genres & Description

Action Documentary War

8.3 / 10

This film recounts the history and attitudes of the opposing sides of the Vietnam War using archival news footage as well as its own film and interviews. A key theme is how attitudes of American racism and self-righteous militarism helped create and prolong this bloody conflict. The film also endeavors to give voice to the Vietnamese people themselves as to how the war has affected them and their reasons why they fight the United States and other western powers while showing the basic humanity of the people that US propaganda tried to dismiss.

Vietnam's politics is dominated by the North Vietnamese leadership's views from Hanoi. During the long Vietnam war every North Vietnamese family was affected by it so the North Vietnamese holds deep-seated grudges against the American and her allies. However given the predicament their country is in they try not to show it outwardly. Russia, and to some lesser extent China, are Vietnam's patrons. Vietnam sees the world through Russia's and China's views which consider all the ills in the world are caused by the American and her allies. This video is used in Vietnam as an anti-American propaganda. Vietnamese Communist agents are embedded in many social network forums to spread lies and promote anti-American sentiments http://www.otofun.net/threads/update-tan-cong-khung-bo-o-paris-khoang-35-60-nguoi-thiet-mang.960374/ http://www.otofun.net/threads/syria-con-lau-moi-co-hoa-binh.958776/ http://www.otofun.net/threads/khung-hoang-nhap-cu-va-su-lan-tron-cua-mot-sieu-cuong.931353/ http://www.otofun.net/threads/ukraine-tinh-hinh-dien-bien-trong-mua-dong-2015.954589/ - @Saturday, November 14, 2015 5:58 PM

But usa lost - @Sunday, July 12, 2015 4:11 AM

The whole movie is simply a montage of video clips taken out of context. The rebuttal for this movie is that the US rightly supported South Vietnam to fight against the expansion of the global communist terrorists. It is very much like the current war against the expansion of the radical ISIS. The Soviet Union, the Communist China together with other brotherly communist countries supported North Vietnam just like they did with North Korea, and East Germany in the pretext of fighting to gain independence. Their sole purpose was to expel the US influential presence out of their perceived backyard. Upon the fall of South Vietnam the Vietnamese communist regime brutally implemented a series of political, social, and economic reform policies modeled after the Soviet Union and Mao's China. Only then people began to fully realize the true nature of the new regime and the terrors that were unfolding. Millions of Vietnamese lost their ancestral lands, properties, businesses, livelihood, future, and ultimately their lives. Thousands of Vietnamese who were considered threats to the new regime ended up languishing for years deep in the jungles in what were known as "re-education" camps. As the result hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese risked their lives to escape to their freedom in the West by boats. Thanks to these refugees the world got a glimpse of the secretive communist regime and what was happening in post-war Vietnam. Bowed to the pressure of the world opinions and the collapse of the Communist Bloc Vietnam had no choice but to open up to the West only recently. Even then widespread corruptions, and nepotism are rampant in Vietnam today. There's no real election in the country. Jobs in government, military, civil services, academia, nationalized industries and businesses at all levels are commodities to be bought, sold, and traded. Vietnamese expats who are going back to visit the country would not be able to pass the airport security check point without putting $20 in their visa when handing it to the security personnel. Just like many Eastern European women from former Communist Bloc who are now selling their bodies throughout Western Europe, Vietnamese women today are selling their bodies throughout South East Asia.  The ironic thing is now communist Vietnam wants the US back to South East Asia to protect them from China. The very thing they accused South Vietnam of in their pretext to wage the war many years ago. - @Tuesday, April 14, 2015 7:48 PM

as an American citizen i completely agree. Let all the dictators and crazed religious extremists kill and maraud all the innocent people of the world (im not being sarcastic) it's not our problem anymore to protect foreigners, we have enough problems to deal with on our own soil. - @Tuesday, January 22, 2013 5:54 AM

Japan was actually a beaten by the Russians. America fought hard with them on Guadacanal and other islands but didn't concur them. America didn't do very much in WW2 as they always say. Just D-day was a big battle from them. But nothing compared with what the Russians and the Chinese had to sacrifice. - @Saturday, July 28, 2012 5:42 AM

Yes, it's very unfortunate that happened, but think about what would've happened if the Americans stayed in Vietnam. Thousands more would've died. And besides, the U.S.S.R collapsed and Vietnam is becoming a fast growing economy and are far more better off than they were during the war. - @Friday, February 8, 2008 7:35 PM

We just finished watching this docufilm yesterday and I just have to say this...... "It is a very powerful film... Powerful enough to stir the emotions of every person present." especially the one when the Vietnamese father describes how his family were killed by those Americans filled with anger and disgust... and after that, Westmoorland describing that "Life to the Orient is Cheap.. it's nothing to them"... - @Friday, February 1, 2008 3:22 AM

Actually, the Khmer Rouge were indigenous to Cambodia and enjoyed little support until Nixon decided that it would be a swell idea to bomb the country. Further. a significant proportion of those who died during the Khmer Rouge reign of terror did so from starvation, which was a consequence of destruction of the livelihood of farmers. - @Friday, January 25, 2008 7:28 PM
