By the way, c.15 prison officers were murdered by Irish murder gangs during this period. But dead Brits don't interest Irish bigots or Western liberals, so ... erm ... fuck 'em, I guess. - @Wednesday, November 7, 2018 6:19 PM

My father's from Afghanistan (Ricky McCormick is not my real name), he fought the Soviets in the 80's while all this was going on. He hated Margaret Thatcher and has never had kind sentiment towards the English, for obvious reasons as an Afghan. At night, he and the other Mujaihadeen would listen to the BBC radio broadcast, and through that would follow Bobby Sands' hunger strike. He was almost as much a hero to them as Massoud. - @Sunday, October 21, 2018 11:15 AM

good movie 'Hunger' directed by Steve McQueen is very relevant in political films. This film tells us how the body becomes a rationale. Bobby Sands, a soldier of the Irish Republican army and a freelance poet for the Irish independence, is in prison in the last life of the jail. Here is a blog link I wrote in my mother language http://faisalbavap.blogspot.com/2013/09/hunger.html by faisal bava email: [email protected] whats app : 00971554316860 - @Friday, July 6, 2018 5:37 PM

all of these Irish and English people alike in the comments need to realize this film isn't about the politics, it doesn't matter what side you're on. i'm personally against the IRA, i think freedom is a good thing to fight for but not in the way they did it. but not only is that completely irrelevant here, but it also does not mean i look down on this film, nor the person/ people it represents. this film is not about the IRA, nor what they or the British did, and whether or not it is right or wrong. this film is about the pain, and the suffering and the discrimination and disregard of rights towards these people, yet the determination and willpower they have to continue to fight for what they believe in. this film is relevant without the true story, without the politics, without the reminder that this all actually happens, it only makes the film even more devastating. and therefore, this film is a masterpiece. - @Wednesday, June 13, 2018 10:19 PM

taking a neutralised view of this man and his situation there are questions to be asked but not easily answered. 1,for this mans life was a tragedy, growing up in terrible discrimination and poverty,it put him on an inevitable path to violence.he wanted change by violent means and that meant death and terrorism,an extremism of kind.justly he was jailed then he chose to make his stand by starvation. question is was he used by the political forces of the murky republican world?some family members of the h-block victims found the sinn fein-ira as unforgivable. maybe a great recruitment manoeuvre? 2,all very easy to condemn thatcher?but if you were the pm at that time would you have put security second?then as he was a criminal why would he get any privilege?Sands intent was to kill. 3,as this film semi romanticised Sands life does it legitimise his violent aims,he didn't live to politically gain them?not sure if he would be a hero really because if he by chance wasn't caught and proceeded to kill whoever, would his heroism then be celebrated?if in 25 years the bataclan or nice terrorists were seen in this way would you agree?remember they want their ideals by violence too.seeing here the comments it's unbelievable how gullible and simple minded some are, take a moment and consider all angles then with reason decide.as a southern irishman he wouldn't be considered a hero to me but certainly a tragic victim of his environment, political exploitation and the system. - @Monday, March 12, 2018 7:30 PM

the imperialistic IRA came to northern Ireland, to try and take it over and force it to join the republic. while most of the people of northern Ireland wanted to be a part of the uk not the republic, truth. IRA= imperialistic uk= protectionist. - @Saturday, January 20, 2018 7:54 PM

Wow this comment section is disgusting. People defending both sides. People saying 'Brit cunts' and suck like. About the killings of British Empire. Oh sorry about something that my ancestors did 100 years ago...? I am British and live in N.Ireland. I do not defend either side. The IRA and the UVF are both terrorists and the British government, like all governments, are not so clean. I would very much like to believe that the hate is over, but stupid people will always be there :/ - @Wednesday, August 30, 2017 11:28 AM

And today Ireland is the most corrupt country in the world. Our prime minister was not elected by the public, the last one stepped down, and the last two before that had to step down due to corruption ( playing golf etc with bank heads before the banks where bailed out by the public). Our last minister for defence ( police / army ) had to step down due to corruption ( he is writing soft porn novels now ! ) The head of Garda ( Irish police ) had to step down also and the one that stepped in looks like she will have to go for the same reasons. Even where they train our Garda ( Irish Police ) it has emerged that it was used for money laundering. Not to mention we bailed out the banks of the EU to about 48% while the rest of the Eu took up the rest. Our President and Prime min are on over £300,00 each a year for a population of 4.7 million. Yes Ireland is in more shit now than ever. The only way out is what the French done years ago. - @Saturday, August 19, 2017 1:04 PM

Bobby Sands was also part of the Provisional Irish Republican Army a terrorist group. Which caused terrible terrorist acts such as the Brighton Hotel bombing. The IRA was responsible for more deaths than any other organisation during the Troubles. Bobby Sands and Joe McDonnell planned the October 1976 bombing of the Balmoral Furniture Company in Dunmurry.  Bobby Sands was not some sort of Warrior Poet as portrayed in this movie. - @Saturday, August 12, 2017 2:11 PM

Film is stunning and intelligently balanced. It doesn't portray Bobby Sands as a Villain or a Hero. It just shows a very determined man who had made up his mind. That scene with the Priest, a republican too, where they strongly disagree about the methods of the IRA and talk about their background is astounding. - @Saturday, August 12, 2017 3:35 AM

I was digging into Fassbender' s filmography because I admire him a lot. First time I saw him was in X- Men, but he did something to me. I was not able to forget his face, his acting, the emotion pouring out of his eyes. I came across this movie just now, and I see not only an opportunity to watch his earlier work but to also learn about Irish history, which I know almost nothing about. Time to learn a little something something. - @Friday, May 12, 2017 4:19 PM

How to become a republican hero. Option 1. Try to take over a post office while the Brits are involved in a world war but fail and get shot Option 2. Ireland must have one of the most tragic of histories out of any country in the world. Over 800 years, nearly a millennium, at war with our closest neighbours. And still the troubles continue today in the north. Heroes like Padraic Pearse, Michael Collins, and Bobby Sands will always be remembered by the Irish along with so many others. Our national anthem really is a soldiers song. - @Saturday, November 28, 2015 8:48 PM

This film is terrific and it avoids all political comment as well (Fassbender said this was key). The people on here praising it as a pro IRA film and bobby sands need to watch it again. Bobby sands was brave but ultimately a deal to stop the war was very close before his death, after his death he became a martyr and there was a huge spike in bombings and attacks. THe intensity of the war increased and ultimately although he didnt know it, far more people on both sides died as a result of it. This is coming from a left wing anti-thatcher person who dislike the english before I get accused of being tory right wing english. - @Tuesday, September 22, 2015 2:29 PM

The English have killed million and millions of more people. and the IRA are the terrorists? surely those that kill more are the bigger terrorists? England has and will always be a terrorist nation. their whole history has been spent on taking from other countries and killing people. they are still doing it today. - @Thursday, August 27, 2015 4:21 PM

In my humble opinion this is the worst movie I have ever seen.  There are endless boring and meaningless shots of a prison guard standing in the snow smoking a cigarette and you can learn ten times as much about Bobby Sands  and his biography by reading a page about him on wikipaedia.  The one interesting scene is the interview with the priest.  there are so many wonderful movies out there.  Don't waste your time on this one. - @Thursday, March 19, 2015 8:26 AM

+Kelu Thatsall hey, just ignore those fuckers. I agree with you, and I saw the movie. The movie is about a period in ireland where there was a big group of people who wanted political freedom (as in being seperated from england) and those people where put in jail for political crimes. The movie shows the people in jail and their protests and how they are being treated there. It's also a bit about the guards there. - @Monday, February 16, 2015 7:27 AM
