In meeting in Kansas, ex-cons Perry Smith and Dick Hickock are breaking several conditions of their respective paroles. The meeting, initiated by Dick, is to plan and eventually carry out a robbery based on information he had received from a fellow inmate about $10,000 cash being locked in a hidden safe in the home of the farming Clutter family of Holcomb, Kansas. After the robbery, they plan on going to Mexico permanently to elude capture by the police. Each brings a necessary personality to the partnership to carry out the plan, Dick who is the brash manipulator, Perry the outwardly more sensitive but unrealistic dreamer with a violent streak under the surface. Perry literally carries all his dreams in a large box he takes with him wherever he goes. The robbery does not go according to plan in any respect, the pair who ultimately hogtie and execute all four members of the Clutter family, only coming away from the home with $43 in cash. As Perry and Dick go on the run, a murder ...

This film launched Scott Wilson's career. While he has had no shortage of work I think he could have been in more movies in leading roles or on television. Glad he is getting great reviews in The Walking Dead. - @Thursday, March 9, 2017 3:36 AM

The director went to great lengths for realism of leading up to and the actual crime and conviction which I appreciate wholly , it's what makes great movies stand out from the mediocre. - @Friday, October 28, 2016 4:09 PM

"Bus station ugliness" You've hit the nail on the head as to where this movie takes you. When I first saw this film it left me unsettled and I still get that feeling after viewing it to this day. What's really disturbing is how much Scott Wilson and Robert Blake resemble the actual killers. Can you imagine waking up to find those two in your bedroom on some dark night. Brooks has crafted a true horror film with real life monsters. - @Wednesday, November 19, 2014 9:30 AM

When Richard Brooks was asked why he chose black and white for this film he answered: "you're awakened from a sound sleep, there's a stranger in your bedroom holding a shotgun and shining a flashlight in your face. You don't see that in color, you see that in black and white." Even after almost fifty years this film is still disturbing and frightening. - @Friday, October 24, 2014 2:27 AM

This was Robert Blake's shining moment.  Then he tried to top it by killing his wife -- I mean taking out the trash. - @Saturday, August 2, 2014 2:09 PM

I used to live in a little town not far from the Clutter home and after reading the book and the 50th anniversary edition on the story, I drove back to the house. Maybe it's the journalist in me that compelled me to do it but it's something I had to do in order to see if I could capture the feeling that Capote must have felt as he entered the crime scene. It was on a cold winter day that I made the drive. No one was around and the scene was every bit as stark and chilling as I would imagine it was the day after the incident. I left there somehow changed and I've never been able to shake the feelings I had as I sat there trying to imagine what must have gone through the poor family's minds just before their lives were snuffed out forever; all for a measly thirty-five dollars. - @Saturday, December 21, 2013 9:30 PM

This is the best book I ever read, except for maybe the 'Scarlet Letter'. Read them both to learn about great writing, and what great writing can accomplish!! - @Thursday, November 15, 2012 5:03 AM

It's an excellent movie and filming it in nearly documentary style, at the actual locations and in particular, the Clutter home, gave the movie a fantastic authenticity. The surviving members of the Clutter family had sold the home not long after the murders and it was a subsequent owner who gave the filmmakers permission to use the location. The house becomes a character, if you will, itself. The cast found it very disconcerting to film the murder scenes in the actual rooms. - @Tuesday, July 31, 2012 1:12 AM
