In Pursuit of Silence is a meditative film about our relationship with silence and the impact of noise on our lives. In our race towards modernity, amidst all the technological innovation and the rapid growth of our cities, silence is now quickly passing into legend. From the Desert Fathers of the third century AD who became the model for Christian monasticism to John Cage's seminal work 4'33" which would go onto inspire a generation of artists, humankind has had a long fascination with silence. In Pursuit of Silence will be the first comprehensive look at this topic whose many dimensions lie at the heart of so much of human progress. Offering audiences a contemplative cinematic experience, the sights and sounds of this film will work its way through frantic minds, into the quiet spaces of hearts, and help shape a new vision of being.

Excellent concept for a film. Finally, someone who understands the beauty and necessity, of silence. Kudos. - @Friday, August 17, 2018 11:12 PM

such an important area to become aware of! speaking of silence, is there a way to shut off the music soundtrack? feels quite distracting, and yes, formulaic film scoring with very predictable and synthetic, uninteresting sounds. really detracts from the experience for me; could the film be made again without film score, with NO SOUND other than talking, Nature, whatever is happening... anyone else have thoughts, feelings?...I applaud the work, as a musician and meditator... - @Thursday, August 9, 2018 12:32 PM

And yet even in this trailer speech is ruined by obnoxious background music. Urghhh! - @Friday, March 16, 2018 8:57 AM

even just going to a grocery store, like Safeway sobeys just blast crap music at you, not even good versions of crap music, Having hearing lost I notice when music is too loud. and it drives me crazy, yes people blasting music can go the other way around, rather then deafness you can get THX hearing where your sound levels are jacked up to the point that everything bugs you. - @Sunday, February 11, 2018 8:16 AM

with deep respect for this film, its subject and all that contributed; if we are really exploring silence, why is there a soundtrack that feels quite 'un-silent' and distracting?; and (with respect), a very traditional, predictable, mainstream soundtrack. I found it quite distracting and uninteresting, while the film caught my eye and mind; is there anyway to shut this film score off? that would be a nice option, especially for this subject...again, no disrespect- I am a musician, and appreciate anyone's musical efforts, but mainstream film scoring is feeling increasingly dissonant with many very interesting films, this included... - @Monday, January 8, 2018 3:12 AM

Beautiful....*sigh of gladness* i've sort after silence for the past year and a half, glad to know others realise value in quietness, and the consequences of our loud and fast paced industrial lives who's dangers have seemingly gone slyly undetected. - @Saturday, September 30, 2017 7:16 PM

Ironic that the film needs a (pretty banal) soundtrack and can't let its own sound be enough. - @Thursday, June 15, 2017 2:18 PM

I saw this film on the plane to Singapore. It's the most enlightening film to hit the screens and the most important. It is beautiful, and for those of you out there going crazy rtight now, this is where you have to go. Problem is I can't buy it or watch it again anywhere. Hey guys, just get it out on DVD and let word and mouth sell it for you. I have told dozens of people, all looking to watch it at a cinema, but it's no-where. Good things only get out there OFF the mainstream! - @Sunday, January 1, 2017 7:55 PM

Enjoyed the film. It was screened at slbi in London. My one quibble, it struck me oveall as anti-urban, as if cities are just all ear-bending traffic, meanwhile many quotes from Cage, and he loved the traffic noise .. - @Wednesday, December 21, 2016 10:32 PM

I don't get why this trailer has continuous background music. It absolutely doesn't reflect the idea of hearing the nature and being silent. - @Thursday, June 16, 2016 11:26 AM

As a sufferer of highly processed music (pumped at me in pub, restaurant and supermarket), I was greatly surprised to hear a musak-type piano track plastered over all the most wonderful sounds of nature during this thoughtful film. Well done the camera team - but pity about the contradictory music.. Steve Hall / UK music producer - @Monday, June 6, 2016 8:12 AM

Can hardly believe I made it to the trailer (birding by ear). Considering the three hour drive to Cleveland to see it, unless it will be any closer to Marietta, Ohio in the extreme southeast corner of the state. Thank you so much. I cannot wait to see this film. - @Friday, April 1, 2016 3:06 AM

Noise is more than irritating to those of us who are plagued with severe tinnitus and hyperacusis (intense sensitivity to sound). Last year I had an operation in which skin was taken from the back of my head and implanted in the area of my ear drum to act as an ear plug just to avoid the outrageous sound levels we now have to endure. Most doctors do not know of this malady and treat it with psycho drugs. This would be a great subject for your next film. I look forward to seeing your current film. - @Sunday, March 20, 2016 4:47 PM

So when can the Ventura Film Society bring you back for a third visit and screen IN PURSUIT OF SILENCE? It looks (and sounds) as fine as I thought it would when you first mentioned the idea. Congratulations, Patrick. Lorenzo DeStefano - @Tuesday, January 7, 2014 8:32 PM
