Genres & Description

Action Horror Sci-Fi

7.4 / 10

The first remake of the paranoid infiltration classic moves the setting for the invasion from a small town to the city of San Fransisco and starts as Matthew Bennell notices that several of his friends are complaining that their close relatives are in some way different. When questioned later they themselves seem changed as they deny everything or make lame excuses. As the invaders increase in number they become more open and Bennell, who has by now witnessed an attempted "replacement" realises that he and his friends must escape or suffer the same fate. But who can he trust to help him and who has already been snatched?

The Pulse-Pounding Precision of a Paranoid "Pod"- Cast ... Who are the unemotional, somnambulant drones who spitefully denied this absolutely top-drawer "Me Decade" redo of at least a paltry smattering of "Oscar" nods? I am well aware that genre pictures, let alone remakes, tend to get short shrift from the cantankerous, white-haired cruds within the Academy but this little Sci'-Fi' '70's sizzler was clearly deserving of some "Above The Line" nominational love. Not to mention Chapman's coldly-clinical, off-kilter San' Fran' lensing and Zeitlin's memorably offbeat One-Off incidental scoring. Whenever I put scissors to paper, I am always reminded of a stylishly primped, Disco' era Sutherland's "Matthew Bennell" and the remaining balance of that fabulously real leading-four ensemble. From the most excellent secondary cast,  an Art Hindle Genetic Duplication Trifecta would be completed with the busted NBC pilot "The Clone Master", also from '78, then Cronenberg's chilling child-custody manifesto "The Brood" as the placenta-ripping Midnight Finale. Every - "Body" Needs Some - "Body" Sometimes... - @Sunday, August 30, 2015 9:11 PM
