Biopic of J. Edgar Hoover told by Hoover as he recalls his career for a biography. Early in his career, Hoover fixated on Communists, anarchists and any other revolutionary taking action against the U.S. government. He slowly builds the agency's reputation, becoming the sole arbiter of who gets hired and fired. One of his hires is Clyde Tolson who is quickly promoted to Assistant Director and would be Hoover's confidant and companion for the rest of Hoover's life. Hoover's memories have him playing a greater role in the many high profile cases the FBI was involved in - the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, the arrest of bank robbers like John Dillinger - and also show him to be quite adept at manipulating the various politicians he's worked with over his career, thanks in large part to his secret files.

I had to look up this stuff after I watch the movie and J Edgar Hoover was considered married to his job but there were theories that he was gay but they were never proven. He was really close to his partner but nothing else. It was never proven that he dressed up in ladies clothes. almost for sure, yes. The dressing in drag was probably made up. But he never had a girlfreind or wife. And every day he picked up Clyde Tolsun, drove him to work and back home. They had lunch and dinner together. They took vacations together. They spent more time together than most married couples (although they did not live together. J Edgar had such an interesting life that I don't think you could fit it all in a film like this. This movie didn't show the countless lives ruined by Hoover's quest to abolish communism, or many other things he did in his career.
