In order to provide for his destitute family of drifters, a likable, sincere, able-bodied 15-year-old boy comes to hire on among a burned-out ex-con's group of aging forest laborers. As the man becomes more and more aware of the boy's abusive home life, his deeply buried humanity is roused. Drinking and smoking incessantly to remain detached from his volatile temper, he finally takes the matter into his own hands - come what may - when the boy's alcoholic father finally goes too far.

i have no idea why everyone is complaining about the movie or calling cage a bad actor. you're overreacting, I think this is pretty good movie and a very interesting one you all should check it out I'm done watching and i feel weird the whole story is just sad and confusing its true that it goes slowly there aren't a lot of things happening some who love drama may get bored but still you get obsessed with the characters who look so real you get into the story and you just keep watching, Cage acting was brilliant and so was the kid's but i hated the characters, i hated how they were living their lives what a waste of good people soooo frustrating and the end wasn't better - @Tuesday, August 25, 2015 4:52 AM

I love nick cage, but this movie is the the worst thing I have ever seen next to hick, I mean what is the theme, and the father I mean his career is being drunk, beats his son for no reason and bacilli sold his own wife and daughter for sex for 60 dollars, and if that wasn't bad a enough, I looked through the comments and no one said this but, it had a Gran Torino ending, the father figure ends up dead for the boy and the boy ends up driving away in the father figures car with the dog and everything is happy. Review of the movie Spoiler Alert ahead Nicolas Cage has made some good movies and some not so great one's. A lot of people seem to like how realistic this movie is. But I am not so sure I agree. For one thing we all have people we do not like. As much as I dislike them I have never pulled up to there house and shot at them a time or two and drive off. And it happened in the middle of the day and NO cops showed up. And also when the cop was sitting at the stop sign. And Joe didn't stop. The cop goes after Joe. But when Joe was forced to stop. He slaps the cop around a bit. Telling him to stop being such a smart ace. You really think you could do that in today's time's. You would have every cop in P.D. with every gun they could get there hand's on after you. And you would be charged with everything in the book. Joe's private life is some what on shaky ground. But lucky for him there is a cat house close by. Not only do they take care of the man but his pet " Dog ' as well. And it appeared he did not pay her much. Kind of a special buy or extra value thing. Oh and they have the quickest B.J. in history. The guy that played the drunk did a good job. The guy beats on his family steals what he can from them. Kill's a hobo for his booze. And attempts to pimp out his young daughter. IF there was one guy you wanted to see suffer. This would have been him. Perhaps no blood gut's and gore. But a good beat down or something. It felt like the people who made this movie went out of there way to make you hate the guy. But to just let him jump to his death. And that was it ? The man that played the drunken Dad ,G.dawg Wasn't an actor..but in reality a drunk homeless man ..I thought his acting was scary realistic (because he was that part),, he also died shortly after the film, from years of being an alcoholic , and Im sure many of the actors in JOE were just real life people from the rural south ....I thought this was Cages best work in years , I wasn't ever a big Nic Cage fan but he definitely has impressed me in this film and as the Alaskan cop in Frozen Ground ..hes a better actor now than he ever was - @Friday, February 6, 2015 10:12 PM
