In fact, they had a baseball team called "the two bridges". It takes place between the years of 1960 and 1990 when I was growing up in a Mafia neighborhood. It is the story of how these people lived their lives. How they brought their old world customs and traditions into the 20th century and lived in the shadow of their heritage. The people lived and died by the codes and unwritten rules laid down by the underworld that controlled their everyday lives. The good, bad and evil weaved everyone together in this environment and ruled their lives with an iron fist. The story unfolds in a seedy neighborhood bar called the “Soft Touch", eight steps down from street level. In the dim lights of the bar, we observe Johnny Irish, an ex-con and a loner, bad mouthing Italians and trying to extort money from Charlie the Wop, the owner. Later, as Johnny Irish is gazing at the records in the jukebox, Tommy the Killer rushes in with a concealed 38 revolver and splatters Johnny's brains all over the glass. Tommy is one of the central figures in the neighborhood. He is a worshipper of the Mafia men and will do anything to gain favor in their eyes. Tommy hopes to be a made Mafia man someday but this will never happen. You see, Big Joey and his son, Joey Jr., know that Tommy is a drug user and they only use him for their own ends. Sometimes he is loaned to other Mafia guys like Little Tony who has laid down the law that anyone who sells drugs in the neighborhood should be killed with no questions asked. Little Tony is known for luring unsuspecting offenders into his social club to kill them by strangulation or with a baseball bat. Tommy is called by Little Tony when a neighborhood wanna-be tough guy, Crazy Ralph is intimidating patrons. Tommy catches Crazy Ralph at 6 a.m. as he is fumbling with his keys to open the car door killing him instantly with one shot to the left side of his temple. The only good thing in Tommy's life is his girlfriend Lucy, an Italian girl from the same block as Tommy. He cares for her but treats her like a second fiddle when Big Joey summons him any time of the day or night. Tommy must use all his wits and cunningness to keep his drug use hidden from the people that he most admires, respects, and will surely die for, the Mafia. After a night of drinking and drugs, Tommy meets his fate in the Soft Touch bar not far from the exact spot where he killed Johnny Irish.
