Found this film on one of those 'Best Ever Film' compilation, and knowing how ropey a lot of horrors are, had to watch it. So straight off the bat, the film relies way, way too much on improvisation. It's obvious. Some scenes are abruptly edited, indicating some merciful omissions of the most cringe-worthy attempts at improv. To be fair the actors aren't bad, but the only one that seemed comfortable enough with the degree of licence the director placed on the cast was the protagonist. This film has no business being on a best ever list. None. Not even on a good horror list. It's like a fusion of UK theatre workshop, meets the wickerman, meets a crap pulp fiction, culminating in a tediously unsatisfying experience. I don't think the actors are to blame for this, uncertain whether the script and budget contribute, but the director's over reliance on improvised scenes was a big mistake. Not as repugnant as Mad Max Fury Road (another best ever list faker, which was so bad I had to turn it off after an hour), but that's hardly a ringing endorsement. Different, but prisoners could find better things to do with 90 minutes of their lives. I want to see Neil Maskell in something else. He could at the very least nail something type-casted, and maybe he has more than that in his locker. His wife too put in a decent performance. - @Monday, April 23, 2018 8:59 AM

that thing strives to be special. not another one of those "horror movies". and honnestly i saw some resemblence on Lars von Trier antichrist. it is devided on chapters the names of which you decipher only along the movie. it has some special camera moves and shots, music, but hell. this shit has a looong way to become something really good. it is just boring. the background story is stretched for 30 first minutes of the movie and it is not justified. not by story itself and not by acting. not sure why such a fuss around this movie. really overestimated. not bad though. - @Saturday, April 9, 2016 3:10 PM

very intelligent use of violence. I sometimes find when a film is relentlessly violent, you become desensitised while watching it which takes away from the impact which many of the directors are presumably trying to provide through it. but Wheatly offers long and relatively mundane dialogue scenes with quite unexpected points of really quite nasty, realistic violence which makes it all the more effective. really a must see if you're into this sort of film. - @Tuesday, March 29, 2016 6:23 PM
