Comedy Documentary Drama Family Fantasy Romance

7.5 / 10

Owen Suskind was a boy of considerable promise, until he developed autism at the age of 3. As Owen withdrew into his silent state, his parents almost lost hope that he find some way to interact with his world in some meaningful way. However, that way was found through animated films, especially those of the Walt Disney Company, which provided Owen a way to understand the world through its stories to the point of creating his own. This film covers the life of Owen and how he manages to become as functional as possible with the help of Disney and his family to the point of having his own life. However, Owen soon learns as well that there is more to real life than what Disney can illustrate in animation even as his family prepares itself for an uncertain future with him.

I'm Aspergian and I am a student in an adult education program for high functioning autism students. We watched this in class. I love this documentary. I can't believe it lost the Best Documentary Oscar to one about ****ing OJ Simpson! Disney movies were a part of my childhood beginning with The Lion King (my favorite). I've always been able to view the characters as longtime friends that I can come back to. That's why I love the TV adaptations so much. - @Saturday, September 22, 2018 6:55 AM

"Owen vanishes"? I'm sorry, but stop. Your kid doesn't disappear because they're now diagnosed as autistic. As an autistic, words like that are hurtful. To say that is to say that the real versions of us have disappeared because we were diagnosed. NO. I've always been autistic. This is who I truly am. It just wasn't apparent until I was about 3. - @Saturday, August 5, 2017 6:34 PM

I have Asperger's Syndrome and Disney has inspired me into never wanting to grow up and never lose sight of my childhood times and memories that have left so much inspiration in me to keep on creating. Heck, I didn't expect to see Lucky Jack standing next to Baloo, Rafiki, and Timon. I am so happy that even the underrated Disney features are given a chance for recognition, and it means not all Disney features have to be complete instant classics every single time just to be noticed, loved, and cherished. All of them from Walt's Era to this era now were created for a purpose. To inspire, not win awards for everything. - @Wednesday, March 1, 2017 12:49 AM

as a fellow autistic man, i also use movies to help myself understand everyday situations, emotions and how to solve surton problems that can come along in life. so if you're a parent with an autistic child and you don't know where to start. i highly recommend you watch this documentary and watch animated movies with your child. than afterwords...you set him/her down and talk to him/her about the movies, ask questions, have him or her ask questions and explain your answers in the same way the characters in disney movies would explain them. i've had colleagues and met people who have kids with autism and i always tell them that they should watch disney, studio ghibli, dreamworks and early don bluth work with them....Because i believe that the more autistic children and adults watch movies...the more they will learn to understand the world....even thought the world is a giant pile of shit if you ask me. - @Monday, February 27, 2017 7:53 PM

My boyfriend is basically an introverted geek who talks to himself a little + doesn't see the point of closing the curtains when he's getting dressed. I wasn't surprised when he told me he had an aspergers diagnosis but I hardly think about because he's unusually empathic + really caring. I couldn't believe how dismayed his family seemed that he could get a girlfriend or that he went thru a phase of being really withdrawn + not liking eye-contact as a kid. He likes all kinds of movies from The Lion King to High Rise. He's really interested in animation. Whether there was some similarity in his childhood to this... - @Wednesday, February 22, 2017 10:31 PM

One of the best documentaries I’ve seen. I had a clue what what was going on in my brother’s mind, but this made it so much more relatable. As if we really know what goes on in anyone else’s mind, because we’re all so completely unique. Every person is shaped by their experiences, and what this family did when nature struck their child an unexpected blow is inspirational. What Owen did for himself leaves me beyond words. “Who decides what a meaningful life is?” Best line ever. As if any of us are “normal” or “better,” just because we don’t have a noticeable or diagnosed “defect.” I think my brother is hands down one of the best people I’ve ever known. - @Saturday, February 18, 2017 8:16 AM

I don't have autism, but my sister does, and this movie explains the struggle me, my brother, and my mom went through, to help her. She's doing good, now, but still struggles with properly speaking. I haven't watch this movie, but I can see it's inspiring. :) - @Sunday, January 8, 2017 3:49 PM
