Nelson Mandela is a South African lawyer who joins the African National Congress in the 1940s when the law under the Apartheid system's brutal tyranny proves useless for his people. Forced to abandon peaceful protest for armed resistance after the Sharpeville Massacre, Mandela pays the price when he and his comrades are sentenced to life imprisonment for treason while his wife, Winnie, is abused by the authorities herself. Over the decades in chains, Mandela's spirit is unbowed as his struggle goes on in and beyond his captivity to become an international cause. However, as Winnie's determination hardens over the years into a violent ruthlessness, Nelson's own stature rises until he becomes the renowned leader of his movement. That status would be put to the test as his release nears and a way must be found to win a peaceful victory that will leave his country, and all its peoples, unstained.

Very sadly disappointed by this film - They took pains to remove the revolutionary aspects and attempted to turn him into a Gandhi figure. They left out completely the crimes of capital, nationally and internationally. - @Wednesday, April 23, 2014 4:55 PM

Moi aussi, I have a dream... - @Saturday, April 5, 2014 1:14 PM

I think people may forget that any acts of violence by Mandela were due to unjust laws put in place by foreigners. Do you expect me to follow your rules when you come into my home pfttt... year right! I guarantee that if the Europeans lived in South Africa without imposing harsh laws and kept equal rights, no acts of violence would be committed.  - @Friday, March 21, 2014 12:17 AM

The movie is more like a tiny little summary that leaves a lot of things out of context. If i hadn't read his autobiography I'd probably have hard time to follow, so I recommend ppl actually reading the book. The movie is nothing more tha a Hollywood production for profit don't form your political beliefs based on it. - @Thursday, February 6, 2014 5:36 AM

This is the biopic of this man with a uncommon ethical sense, Nelson Mandela, who made a lasting mark in the 20th century. As many others, I had a general knowledge therefore imprecise, of the life and times of this remarkable man.  This film allows us to appreciate and I strongly underline this, without complacency, why this man became a great among the greats. As in most dramatized biopics, we can doubt some of the facts presented, but I believe the film to be right on the mark most times.  Even inviting us to further expand our knowledge of his life. This film is beautiful and a fitting tribute to this historic figure. Finally, Idris Elba is the title role is extraordinary is his demeanour and his tone. A must see!  - @Wednesday, January 29, 2014 4:58 PM

I just love how some people call him a criminal for bombing innocent people and all that crap. George Washington murdered entire Indian tribes that supported the British even those that remained neutral. Union troops burned down southern towns and other civilian instillation. The point I am trying to make is that their are no real heroes. You could even argue that MLK led people to death with his marches. People die for what they believe, people will also be killed. I could argue that if the whites backed down maybe those innocents would be alive. - @Sunday, January 26, 2014 3:40 PM
