Out of the blue, Captain Walton and his men overhear a dreadful cry and they see a stranger coming to the ship. He introduces himself and Victor Frankenstein and he tells to the captain the story of his life since he was a little boy in Geneva. Victor is a brilliant student and in love with his stepsister Elizabeth, an orphan that was raised by his father Baron Frankenstein. In 1793, Victor moves to Ingolstadt to study at the university and he promises to get married to Elizabeth. At the university, Victor befriends Henry Clerval who becomes his best friend. Fully retains the flavor of the book, and where it strays - those changes were well considered liberties which did not derail the story in any way. Keeps the love, loss, tortured souls, anger, frustrations... it keeps everything the book was about. Read it. But if you can't read it, then take this movie as the penultimate retelling of the original theme: Each life is unique, each relationship is important in the creation of ourselves, and obsession without temperance or consideration can easily curse what life you have remaining, with regret, pain, sorrow. - @Thursday, January 18, 2018 1:25 PM

The problem with this movie is that they made it more akin to a shakespearean tragedy rather than frightning horror. - @Wednesday, July 15, 2015 11:36 PM

I hadn't seen this movie as a kid since it came out in the mid-90s. Re-watching it recently, I was pleasantly surprised that it holds up well. Really good, with some actors (Robert DeNiro, John Cleese) playing against type. - @Sunday, March 15, 2015 1:01 AM

Helena Bonham carter is terrible as usual, these hoity toity actors ruin this film. it seems the characters have nothing to do all day but hang around in massive rooms in their mansions wearing wigs and bouncing around like lunatics to shit music?!?!wtf - @Saturday, November 8, 2014 2:23 AM

This movie isn't half so good than the book, just red the book and until the first minutes of the movie, the protagonists and the environment are just grotesc , the producer wanted to created some sort of goth-universe in this movie which isn't in the book. If you have read the book , I won't recommend to you to watch the movie. - @Saturday, June 7, 2014 12:20 AM

Well it was an adaptation as such it's point isn't to be 100% like the source material but to make it work in a new medium. Just as a movie what did you think about it? or was it just to difficult to divorce yourself from the book? - @Thursday, October 24, 2013 9:36 PM

I bought this and Bram Stoker's Dracula last night in a two pack. Love them both. My favorite thing about Dracula is surprisingly not Gary Oldman, but Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing. My favorite thing in Frankenstein is De Niro, who, I agree with many of the comments, was fantastic as the Monster. Both are great films, and I love watching them back-to-back. - @Sunday, September 8, 2013 11:25 PM

I have no idea why people are being so harsh... Robert De Niro was FANTASTIC as was Kenneth Branagh. I mean, sure the film was extrememly exaggerated and different to the novel but that's not the point. No film will ever be a perfect representation! I thought it was at least much more gripping, sorrowful, thrilling and moving than any shitty hammer horror... - @Saturday, September 7, 2013 3:24 PM

It certainly has flaws and is no classic by traditional standards but is a legend come to life by its own standards incredible more gruesome than scary but leave the scariness for the black and white movie this is a powerful film allowing others to take a glimpse into what happens when you step outside the barriers God placed upon man like jurassic park shows it never goes well and the perpretrators suffer greatly as well as the true victim.....the creation. - @Saturday, August 17, 2013 5:00 AM
