Wanting to learn from the best, aspiring boxer Maggie Fitzgerald wants Frankie Dunn to train her. At the outset he flatly refuses saying he has no interest in training a girl. Frankie leads a lonely existence, alienated from his only daughter and having few friends. Maggie's rough around the edges but shows a lot of grit in the ring and he eventually relents. Maggie not only proves to be the boxer he always dreamed of having under his wing but a friend who fills the great void he's had in his life. Maggie's career skyrockets but an accident in the ring leads her to ask Frankie for one last favor.

after watching this film i lost respect for all the actors and especially for Clint Eastwood as this film is highly discriminate of disabled people, a woman who spent her life fighting would not want to commit suicide rather then live the rest of her life disabled. Every single time I watch this movie I always fast forward the scenes with Jay Baruchel as “Danger”. Such a horrible, unnecessary and over the top character that makes this go from a perfect movie to a NEAR perfect movie. I remember the opening night showing so clearly. Forced my mother and grandmother when I was 13 to see it with me. Sold out showing and we couldn’t get seats together. I sat up front, my grandmother a few rows behind me and my mom in the back right. I could actually hear them crying amidst the sound of everyone else crying.
