The story is set in 1947, following a long-retired Holmes living in a Sussex village with his housekeeper and her young son. But then he finds himself haunted by 30-year old case. Holmes memory isn't what it used to be, so he only remembers fragments of the case: a confrontation with an angry husband, a secret bond with his beautiful but unstable wife.

The Brits own this franchise. Every time the Americans title anything 'Sherlock Holmes' they manage to bollox it up completely. The brilliance of Arthur Conan Doyle's creation was even lost on him when he wrote the stories, but write them he did, and they stand the test of time. In many ways Sherlock Holmes was the first super hero character of the modern age, and it was all because he was observant, smart, and original. Sadly those are still qualities unrecognized in most modern humans who require guns, explosions and sex scenes to keep them engaged. The best of the depictions of Holmes was the series done with the late actor Jeremy Brett, who unlike any American to attempt the feat, actually bothered to understand what Arthur Conan Doyle created. I do look forward to this as an interesting line of inquiry about the character so well known and loved the world over. - @Monday, May 18, 2015 2:45 PM

Was "chuffed" indeed to learn that Ian McKellen was to portray an "aging Sherlock Holmes." But in 1947? Sherlock Holmes would have been 93 at minimum. Seems improbable that a man of his years and unhealthy lifestyle would even be alive in 1947, let alone functioning in society as the trailer suggests - not to mention dressing in Victorian garb. Ridiculous is more like it. A pity they did not set it in the '20s or '30s, which would have actually made sense. Still, I will see it and probably love it. At worse it is sure to far surpass the insufferable comic book action movie rubbish that were the Downey Jr. films. - @Tuesday, May 12, 2015 5:08 PM

Did they just reveal the culprit at the end of the trailer? We haven't had a true to novel portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on the big screen in the U.S. for a very long time. I think they should just be true to the books for once. Everybody puts these weird spins on him. One show has an Asian female Watson, Robert Downey Jr. was Iron Holmes, and so on. Sherlock is a British man with Irish descent isn't he? He's tall and built well, I'd say Jude Law would have made a better Sherlock than Watson. - @Tuesday, May 12, 2015 3:35 PM
