In the summer of 1975 in a neighborhood in Boston, 3 kids, Dave Boyle and two of his friends, Jimmy and Sean, are playing on the sidewalk when Dave gets abducted by two men and endures several days of sexual abuse. Eventually, Dave escapes traumatized throughout adulthood. Jimmy is an ex-con and a father of three, whose daughter Katie, is found dead and Dave becomes the number one suspect. Sean is a homicide detective, investigating Katie's murder, ends up finding himself faced with past and present demons as more is uncovered about Katie's murder. Learning Katie had a boyfriend, ballistics later turn up a gun belonging to the father, which then puts her boyfriend as the suspect. Will Sean find out who killed Katie? Will Jimmy make it through the investigation? And will Dave ever find out what really happened when he was abducted?

Police need evidence before arresting, so Sean couldn't arrest Jimmy at that time. Even if Sean knows Jimmy killed Dave, there's no evidence for it, so he's literally be arresting on suspicion. As "you should have told me sooner" is by no means a confession by the law's standards. Great movie. Its about loyality. Pople are sad because dave was killed, but look at him he killed a pedophile but couldnt admit that to his wife. He saw jimmys daughter in the bar but couldnt tell him. He lied to jimmy just to save his life. That man deserved to die, he was the ultimate coward. The real dave was already dead. His wife didnt trust him, his family was dead. She delated him to a fucking gangster instead of talking to him about her thoughts. She was just as coward as him. A traitor. Say what you want, Jimmy was a fucking real man with big balls. He wouldnt let the work for the police, he would find the fucking murderer, no matter what. Based on what he had, he did what he should have done, killed the murderer of her daugher, confessed. In the following day he admitted his mistake to his wife, he admitted that he had killed de wrong man to his wife. Dave didnt admit that he killed a pedophile do his wife. Spoiler Alert: Am I the only one who didn't think this movie was all that great? I thought it had a lot of potential, and was excited to watch it when I saw all the great actors in it. However, they over-acted basically every scene. I can't believe they won awards for that, it gave me a high school play type vibe. Next, the plot was completely unrealistic. I understand it was a book, but damn! I don't get how people loved it so much. I mean, am I the only thought that so much time could've been saved if they had just checked that 911 call in the first place? That is their job! Even so that whole part just came out of nowhere. It was like "hey, we didn't check this!" Even if it was just bad detective work, there was no foreshadowing, no prior indication that it could've, somehow, been the break in the case. I also didn't understand that part about Sean's wife? It made no sense! They needed to go deeper into that in order to make it work, but instead, it seemed like some random side note. The camerawork and editing were not that good. Dave's flashbacks were cringe-worthy, and didn't flow at all. When it was cutting between the Harris fight and Jimmy killing Dave, it seemed like some low budget indie film. The ending wasn't bad at all. These shit-for-brains can't realize that the last scenes weren't anything but an uncomfortable uplifting feeling and that everybody turned into a shallow asshole after what the ex-con did to Dav. Nobody but Dav's wife felt lost and confused . Nothin but straight-forward was what the ending showed. OMG IT WAS SO GOOD! Then the ending... lol. What a shame they couldnt just end it short or just wrote it differently... I really hope this being a novel wasnt a conflict of changing the outcome and came out like this. I never read the book but if this was how it ended, then they really shouldve just bought the full rights and rewrote the ending. Acting was really good too. The cop shouldn't let him go free in the end because he actually admitted to him that he killed david. The last scene with the parade was completely without any kind of meaning.
