Though recognized for heroism as a lad, Ned Kelly can not escape the stigma of being the eldest of a brood sired by a known criminal. In days when an arrest equaled guilt and a conviction, his unfair imprisonment for horse thievery puts him steadfast, in the eyes of Victorian police, on the wrong side of things for life. With a sister unable to dissuade the unwanted advances of Constable Fitzpatrick, Ned, his brother Dan, and friends Joe Byrne and Steve Hart soon find themselves labeled "an outlaw gang" by the less-than-honorable constable. It's a designation they're apt to live up to after Ned's mother is unfairly arrested and sentenced to three years hard labor. In retaliation, the Kelly Gang strikes out against the oppressive Victorian government, with ultimately tragic results and passage into Australian folklore.

As much as I absolutely love Heath Ledger, this is the farthest from his best performance ... according to his IMDb (not the best source, but still) " his version of Ned Kelly (2003) was an absolute flop, which led distributors hesitant to even release it outside Australia." I don't think Ned Kelly was an admirable person (apart from the way he died, even those who hated him acknowledge he went to the gallows with courage), and while the inaccuracy of this film has pissed me off at times, as a film on its own, not compared to history, I did enjoy it. As a fun action film with a romantic but still enjoyable plot. Why was romanticism invented? Why do people romanticise the truth? Entertainment. Sheer entertainment. Would have been a better film if it hadn't been put across as 'poor oppressed Irish versus nasty oppressive English' propaganda. Besides, would Ned Kelly have spoken with an Irish accent? He was Australian by birth, so wouldn't he have picked up an Aussie accent? Come to think of it, I don't think there was a single Australian accent in this film.
